War of 1812 Encampment

Saturday & Sunday, June 26-27
10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

On June 26-28, the War of 1812—America's “Forgotten War”—comes again to Genesee Country Village & Museum.

Buffalo has been burned to the ground. Refugees are streaming eastward to the relative safety of the Genesee Country. Batavia and Canandaigua are homes to military arsenals. Volunteers are joining militia and regular army troops are marching west.

Western New York villages sit uneasily on the front lines of the war.

The museum’s historic village will be inhabited by special townspeople, including reenactors from Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, Maryland and Virginia who will offer insight into the impact of the conflict on the region during this look at the War of 1812 in the Genesee Country.

Scheduled programs and on-going demonstrations on uniforms, music and the construction of various items from canteens to knapsacks to cartridge boxes and uniforms will show how places like Batavia and Canandaigua supported the American war effort.

Through demonstrations of sewing, dyeing, cooking and programs on women’s fashions, many of the guest reenactors will show how life in the Genesee Country continued despite the war.

Hucksters, including a Tarot card reader, looking to make a buck on soldiers and civilians, will also hover about.

Visitors can inspect American military campsites and learn first-hand by talking with soldiers and civilians what was happening on the Niagara Frontier and in the Genesee Country during the war.

Drills, a tactical demonstration and artillery firing are just some of the military activities.

On Saturday at 2 p.m., Celia Easton of the Jane Austen Society of North America will present "Jane Austen’s Military Men" in the Town Hall. A number of items from the museum’s new historic clothing collection will be on display in the Meeting Center on Saturday, where visitors can meet historic clothing expert Susan Greene, the collection’s previous owner.

There will also Regency Era dancing in the Meeting Center by the Country Dancers of Rochester and other musical entertainment.

“America’s Second War for Independence” turned out to be a bloody affair costing thousands of lives and resulting in huge losses of property before America signed a peace treaty with Great Britain in December 1814. There were no gains for either side.

Standard  Event pricing: $15 adult; $9 youth 4-16, $12 seniors 62+ or students with ID, children under 3 admitted free.
