Home-School Programs (Fall Sampler)

Start the new school year with a week of experiences in the 19th century! These programs have been designed with parent input to truly bring history to life. Students receive a loan of period clothing, which will become their outfit for the week. ($40 deposit will be refunded when the costume is returned.) A Friday night family sleepover may be added to your week!


 

NEW! Living A Long Time Ago Year 1 (ages 4-5; 6-7)
Date: September 14-18
Time: Ages 4-5 from 10 a.m.-Noon
Ages 6-7 from 12:30 p.m.-3 p.m.
Fees: Ages 4-5: $80 nonmembers/$70 members
Ages 6-7: $100 nonmembers/$90 members

Description: Experience life as our great-grandparents might have in the 19th century. Understand how things were the same and different “a long time ago.” Visit a different house or business each day and follow up with role-playing fun using costume pieces and props, creating crafts and artwork, learning games, singing songs and creating stories. Year 1 of a four-year cycle.
 
NEW! Tom Sawyer Days (ages 8-12)
Date: September 14-18
Time: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Fees: $200 nonmembers/$175 members
Description: Re-enact the adventures of Tom Sawyer. Set up camp, gather firewood and light a fire using flint and steel. Cook over the open fire. Make a slingshot and shoot at a target. Who knows what other adventures are in store?
   

NEW! Rug Hooking and Rug Braiding (ages 10-14)

Date: September 14-18
Time: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Fees: $200 nonmembers/$175 members
Description: If you had lived 200 years ago, you would have made rugs for your home, possibly by hooking and braiding. Combine these two techniques to make a small unique rug with a hooked center surrounded by braided rings.
 

NEW! Confections (ages 13-17)

Date: September 14-18
Time: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Fees: $200 nonmembers/$175 members
Description: Prerequisite: Intermediate Foodways or Intermediate Boys’ Cooking
A 19th-century adventure in decorative confections! Create fancy sweets such as candies, marzipan, cookies, pies and cakes. Record the receipts in your Receipt Book, so you'll be able to make masterpieces at home, too.
   
Summer Slumber - Now on Friday night!
Date: September 14-18
Fees:

8 and older: $35 each child
Adults/younger siblings: $15 each

Description: Students age 8 and up may enjoy an optional Friday Night Slumber experience (must be accompanied by adult.) Students and adults will enjoy evening activities, which may include a night hike on the nature trails, a lantern-light village walk and a campfire. Bring board games, puzzles, and card games if you wish, but please leave your electronic games at home. Dinner, bedtime snack and breakfast are included. Indoor sleeping space provided; tent camping optional. Bring your own sleeping bag/blankets, pillow, flashlight, toiletries and change of clothes.
