Home-School Programs (Fall Sampler)

Start the new school year with a week of experiences in the 19th century! These programs have been designed with parent input to truly bring history to life. Students receive a loan of period clothing, which will become their outfit for the week. ($40 deposit will be refunded when the costume is returned.) A Friday night family sleepover may be added to your week!


 

 Living A Long Time Ago Year 2 (ages 4-5; 6-7)
Date: September 13-17
Time: Ages 4-5 from 10 a.m.-Noon
Ages 6-7 from 12:30 p.m.-3 p.m.
Fees: Ages 4-5: $80 nonmembers/$70 members
Ages 6-7: $100 nonmembers/$90 members

Description: Experience life as our great-grandparents might have in the 19th century. Understand how things were the same and different “a long time ago.” Visit a different house or business each day and follow up with role-playing fun using costume pieces and props, creating crafts and artwork, learning games, singing songs and creating stories. Year 2 of a four-year cycle.
 
NEW! My Side of the Mountain (ages 8-12)
Date: September 13-17
Time: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Fees: $200 nonmembers/$175 members
Description:
This class will be taught at the nature center and students will not wear historic costumes.
You will become part of the adventure recounted in this classic children’s book as you explore the museum’s many diverse habitats and learn about native plants and wildlife. Crafts and activities will be based on the survival skills of our hero, Sam Gribley, and may include leather working, fire making, outdoor cooking and journaling. There will be a special appearance by a local falconer. This week is sure to create memories for a lifetime!
   

NEW! Beginning Cooking (ages 12-15)

Date: September 13-17
Time: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Fees: $200 nonmembers/$175 members
Description:

This is your opportunity to experience hearth cooking for the first time. Explore the museum gardens, and bring ingredients back to the kitchen. Bake biscuits, crackers and cookies. Make your own lunch during the week, and design your very own receipt (recipe) book.

 

 Summer Slumber - Now on Friday night!

 Date:  September 17
 Fees:  8 and older: $35 each child
Adults/younger siblings: $15 each
 Description:  Students age 8 and up may enjoy an optional Friday Night Slumber experience (must be accompanied by adult.) Students and adults will enjoy evening activities, which may include a night hike on the nature trails, a lantern-light village walk and a campfire. Bring board games, puzzles, and card games if you wish, but please leave your electronic games at home. Dinner, bedtime snack and breakfast are included. Indoor sleeping space provided; tent camping optional. Bring your own sleeping bag/blankets, pillow, flashlight, toiletries and change of clothes.
