“Factually Frocked: Gendering Children in 19th-century America
Saturday, February 24, 2 – 3 p.m.
This talk (hosted by Curator Brandon W. Brooks) will debut the latest addition to “Becoming Gendered,” a micro-exhibit of daguerreotypes, cabinet cards, carte-de-visite, tintypes, and ambrotypes of boys and girls in various stages of childhood development.

“The Conservation of the Lost Societal Norm”
Saturday, March 2, 2 – 3 p.m.
Hosted by Tyler Angora, curator Holland Land Office Museum, this talk examines the frocking of young boys – once a societal norm seen in examples of historic fashion and portraiture. One such example is the Charles Willis Portrait from the Holland Land Office Museums collection, a reproduction of which is currently on display in our “Becoming Gendered” exhibit. This painting showcases a lost societal norm of frocking young boys, and was almost lost due to decades of improper knowledge of care and preservation. Come learn about the conservation of the painting that shares a lost history and the importance of caring for museum objects.
