"Hidden in the Stone Garden"
Pick your poison on Sunday, October 26, from 1 – 3 p.m. at our Fall Tea set in our ghoulish Gallery! Get dressed to death for spooky season and savor the warm and cozy flavors of fall.
On Sunday, we will welcome Patti Unvericht, who will give a compelling presentation on the most famous and awe-inspiring cemetery in our area. Mount Hope Cemetery, dedicated in 1838, was the first Victorian park-like cemetery in the country. It invites visitors to stroll among its hills, valleys, eskers, and glacial kettles. Spanning 196 acres, the natural beauty of the grounds captivates everyone who has had the pleasure of visiting. More than 350,000 people from all walks of life rest here, lying side by side without discrimination. As John Donne once said, “Death comes equally to all of us and makes us all equal.” The headstones commemorate not only the prominent figures of Rochester but also the local grocer and the child who passed away too young.
Before Tea, explore the haunting history of the American rural cemetery movement in an exhibit in the John L. Wehle Gallery and learn from our curatorial team about Victorian mourning.
Tickets to All Hallows’ Tea events include access to the Historic Village (open from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. with a limited number of open historical homes and buildings), 5+ miles of Nature Trails, exhibits in the John L. Wehle Gallery, and shopping in the Flint Hill Store.
