Light up your summer nights!

Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, glowworms, or members of the Lampyridae family, are magical little creatures. Come join us to learn more about them and their powers of bioluminescence, right in their natural habitat. Bring your family for a guided evening hike across our Oatka Creek meadow, behind the scenes of the Museum. 

Need-to-know info

  • Wear boots or sturdy walking shoes.
  • Pants and long sleeves are recommended.
  • We will provide bug nets, jars, and guides for learning about fireflies.
  • Please arrive at the Nature Center Building to check in 15 minutes early.
  • Be advised that Oatka Creek is just less than a mile from the Nature Center building.

Museum Members: $13 

Museum Member Youth: $6

Adults: $15 

Youth (3 – 12): $7


Is there ample parking?

Parking is free and plentiful! Park in the Nature Center parking lot, or park in any of the main parking lots at the front of the Museum and walk over to the Nature Center. 

Where do I check in?

Check-in will be at the Nature Center. Please make sure to arrive no later than 8 p.m. to ensure that you don’t miss anything!

How do I show my purchased tickets?

Please have your ticket(s) either printed out OR pulled up on your phone screen and ready for scanning for quick and easy check-in. You may also be asked to give your name at check-in.  

is this event rain or shine?

Yes – this event is rain or shine! Please dress accordingly for the predicted weather conditions. We will cancel only in the case of thunderstorms or severe weather.

Will there be bugs and mosquitos outside?

Outdoor activities can put you into contact with mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects; we recommend covering up and utilizing insect and tick repellent. More information on ticks can be found here.

How should I dress?

Please dress accordingly for the predicted weather conditions.  

Be advised that the Firefly experience will involve a mile walk to and from the Nature Center Building; guest transport will NOT be available during this program. Please wear boots or sturdy walking shoes. 

Should I bring anything with me?

We will provide bug nets, jars, and guides for learning about fireflies. Please feel free to bring extra bug and/or tick spray. 

Can I bring my dog?

Leashed, certified service animals are welcome with proper identification. 

What if I need a refund for my ticket?

We’re sorry to hear that you can’t join us! Tickets may be refunded only up to 7 days prior to the event date and are strictly non-transferable by date, entry time, or program. 

What else will be open?

As this event falls outside of our regular operating hours, the Flint Hill Gift Shop, Depot Restaurant, and Freight House Pub will all be closed.
