Some claim it is the oldest known American cocktail with origins in antebellum New Orleans. This drink is a combination of Rye Whiskey, Bitters, and sugar, stirred with ice, then strained into a chilled glass that has first been given an absinthe rinse.
Mamie Taylor
Meet the predecessor to the Moscow Mule! It dates from 1899, when it was invented in Rochester, NY, and named after an opera singer of the same name. This tall drink combines Scotch, fresh lime juice, and ginger beer.
The Last Word
Originating at the Detroit Athletic Club, the recipe for this popular cocktail was brought to New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1919 by a famous vaudevillian named Frank Fogarty, where the concoction, a mix of gin, lime juice, maraschino liqueur, and mysterious green Chartreuse, became an instant hit.
