Calling all homeschool families!
Join us at GCV&M on Wednesday, March 22, for a sweet exploration into the history of maple sugaring in NY State! Homeschool family groups will have the opportunity to self-guide throughout the Nature Center Trails and the Historic Village, where they will interact with costumed historical interpreters demonstrating fascinating traditional tasks. See the modern-day sugar house, explore a 19th-century sugar camp, learn about historical uses of maple sugar in the Historic Village, and more! Plus, indulge in a pancake breakfast in the Meeting Center!

Visit the sugar house
Visit our modern-day Sugar House to see the evaporator in action, learn how much sap it takes to make one gallon of maple syrup, smell the sweet bubbling sap as it boils down into thick sugary syrup, and more.
Explore the sugar bush
Journey to the 19th century to see the techniques and tools that early settlers used to collect sap and make maple sugar! Explore the sugar bush and surrounding trails, where you will learn from costumed historic interpreters how clear sap was boiled down into thick maple syrup and hardened into maple sugar.
Experience cultural traditions
With the help of incredible guest performers and storytellers such as Perry Ground, Ronnie Reitter, Tonia Galban, and the Indigenous Spirit Dancers, homeschool families will have the opportunity to explore Hodinöhsö:ni’ (Haudenosaunee) cultural traditions and storytelling related to maple sugaring season.
Venture into the Historic Village
Meander in and out of historic homes around the Village and explore 19th-century uses for maple syrup and sugar – and even sample some historic “receipts,” called recipes, today!
Indulge in a pancake breakfast
This year during our Maple Madness Homeschool Family Field Trip, you have the option to add on a delicious pancake breakfast in the Museum’s Meeting Center! Please note: tickets for the field trip and the pancake breakfast must be purchased separately.
