September Homeschool Family Field Trip Day

Calling all homeschool families!

Join us at GCV&M on Friday, September 13, for our September Homeschool family Field Trip Day! Come explore all that the 19th-century Historic Village has to offer, and on what is sure to be a quiet day. (Please note, we will still be open to the public, but will have programming specific to homeschool families.)

Enjoy discounted admission and timed programming / hands-on workshops just for homeschoolers! 

Explore life in the 1800s!

As you make your way around our 19th-century Historic Village, explore what life was like for families in the Genesee Valley Region in the 19th-century through a number of hands-on learning experiences. 

  • Explore objects from history and learn about their uses
  • Participate in a Spelling & Arithmetic Bee at the One Room Schoolhouse. Winners will receive a prize!
  • Practice your writing skills with quill and ink
  • Meet animals on the Early Settlement Farm
  • and so much more!

Add-on workshops must be purchased in addition to a general admission ticket

On this special day, homeschool families are invited to supplement their visit by adding on a unique, hands-on experience! For just $10, choose one a workshop offering:

Please note: You will need to purchase a September Homeschool Family Field trip ticket in addition to a workshop ticket. 

19th-Century Etiquette Workshop (1 – 2 p.m.)
Join a 19th century tea party! Learn how to act with proper manners around company, decorate a fan, make a lavender sweet bag, and learn all about (and taste!) common 19th-century tea blends. Click here to buy tickets. 

19th-Century Cooking Workshop (1 – 2 p.m.)
Join one of our historic educators as they walk you through a 19th-century “receipt.” As a group, you will make a creation together in one of our historic kitchens! This workshop is appropriate for homeschoolers ages 10 – 16. Click here to buy tickets. 

19th-Century Trades Workshop (1 – 2 p.m.) 
Test your hand at tinsmithing to create a nutmeg grater, alongside our historic tinsmith! This workshop is appropriate for homeschoolers ages 8 – 12. Click here to buy tickets. 

All workshops have limited availability, and tickets must be purchased online in advance. For the 19th-century etiquette workshop, caregivers are welcome to join! For the Cooking and Trades workshops, families can drop off their homeschooler for the workshop and enjoy exploring the Village!

FAQs

Do Museum Members need to purchase tickets to attend this event?

Because this is an Education program, Museum Members do need to purchase tickets to attend this Homeschool Day. 

Is there ample parking?

Parking is free and plentiful! Park in any of the main lots at the front of the Museum. Please leave the first two bays available for handicapped parking. 

Where do I check in?

Check-in will be through the Admissions tunnel at the front of the Museum. 

Should I bring a picnic lunch?

Yes, please feel free to bring a bag lunch (no glass containers or outside alcohol). The Depot Restaurant will be open from 11 am – 3 pm (grill closes at 2). 

How do I show my purchased tickets?

Please have your ticket(s) either printed out OR pulled up on your phone screen and ready for scanning for quick and easy check-in. Pro-tip: take a screenshot of each of your tickets to have ready and pulled up on your phone screen! Please note: Wifi can sometimes be spotty at the front of the Museum. 

is this event rain or shine?

Yes! This event is rain or shine. The Museum will only cancel in case of a severe weather emergency.

How should I dress?

Please dress for the predicted weather conditions and wear comfortable footwear for walking. Paths through the Historic Village are made of crushed gravel or bricks and can be uneven. 

Is this a guided tour?

No, this is not a guided program. You will be self-guiding throughout the Historic Village. 

Are service animals welcome?

Yes! Leashed service animals are welcome with proper identification.

What if I need a refund for my ticket?

We’re sorry to hear that you’re not able to attend! Tickets may be refunded only up to 7 days prior to the event date and are strictly non-transferable by date, entry time, or program.
