Nature Sunday experiences are fun for the whole family!

The Genesee Country Nature Center is an outstanding natural area with hundreds of acres of woodlands, meadows, ponds, old fields, fascinating geologic formations, plants, and animals. Visit the Center every Sunday for an independent hike, or join one of our naturalists for a guided nature experience. Guided Nature Sunday programs will run approximately 45-60 minutes and travel no more than a mile. The Nature Center building and trails will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm for a suggested donation of $5.

Winter Guided Hikes and Activities

"A Warm Winter Tail" StoryWalk™

Every Sunday through March 11
On this winter StoryWalk™ you and your family will explore the trails of the GCV&M Nature Center while reading "A Warm Winter Tail" by Carrie A. Pearson. Independent tours will be available 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., after checking in at the Nature Center. If you would like an extra special StoryWalk​™, join our naturalist for a guided version at 11:00 am.

Winter Walk in the Village

Every Sunday through March 11
The village may be “closed,” but every Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm you are invited to walk the streets this winter and see the houses decorated with a layer of freshly fallen snow. Have a winter photo shoot, or just appreciate the tranquility and beauty of the season. Join one of our naturalists for a guided village walk every Sunday at 3:00 pm.

Snow fun!

Sunday, February 25
Join us for a fun day learning about and playing with snow. Listen to a story, make a snowman, and, if there is snow on the ground, bring your sled for races down the hill in the Great Meadow. Even if there isn’t snow, we will still be having fun creating a snowless snowman and other snow related crafts and games. Check in at the Nature Center at 1:00 p.m.

Mammals in March

Sunday, March 4 and 11
Humans deal with winter differently than other mammals do. Join one of our naturalists for a guided nature walk and learn about the many ways local mammals survive the long winter. Bundle up and look for signs of life on the trail, like tracks and scat. Then, warm up inside and explore our collection of animal furs and tracks. This hands on experience is fun for all ages! Check in at the Nature Center at 1:00 p.m.

Maple Sugar Festival

March 17, 18, 24, and 25
There will be no Nature Sunday experiences on Sunday March 18 and 25, but the museum will be hosting a Maple Festival that is fun for all ages. Join us for a maple hike, demonstrations, tastings, and a delicious pancake breakfast with real maple syrup.

Picnic by the Pond

Every Sunday, April 8- September 30
Looking for somewhere to eat your lunch? Come have a picnic by the pond. Enjoy your lunch and after you finish we would be happy to introduce you and your family to the turtles, salamanders, and frogs that call our ponds home. For those looking for a little extra adventure, nets and buckets will be available for some hands on, or should I say in, fun! Meet at the Nature Center at 12:30 p.m.

The Salamander Squad

Every Sunday, April 8- September 30
Join the Salamander Squad! Every Sunday this spring help look for the many different salamander species found at the Genesee Country Village and Museum. Learn how to safely locate, document, and protect each species and how you can help them survive. These amazing amphibians are all around us you just have to know where to look. Meet at the Nature Center at 3:00 p.m.

Nature Fools

Sunday, April 8
April fools is not just for people. Nature has a way of fooling us every day! Spend this April Fool’s day hiking through the forest discovering the many ways plants and animals fool us, and each other, to survive. Will you be fooled? Meet at the Nature Center at 1:30 p.m.

The Secrets in the Stones

Sunday, April 15, May 20, and June 24, July 15, August 26, September 16
Search for evidence of ancient seas, glaciers, and old farms as you learn to discover the secrets in the stones. We’ll stop midway along the trail to enjoy a reading of the children’s classic “Everybody Needs a Rock”. Meet at the Nature Center at 1:30 p.m.

Salamander Shenanigans (Amphibian Awareness Day)

Sunday, April 22
Have you ever wanted to learn more about salamanders and other amazing amphibians? Join us for some Salamander Shenanigans at the Genesee Country Village and Museum Nature Center from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm to learn more about the sneaky species of salamanders that live all around us. Hike out to the vernal pond with a guide at 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm In the nature center, enjoy salamander themed crafts, games, and activities to help save salamander species in your area. There will be so much salamander fun your family will want to spend the whole day at the Nature Center!

Avian Adventures

Sunday, April 29, May 27, June 3, July 8, August 5, September 2
Join us for an amazing avian adventure. Hike around the Nature Center looking, and listening, for the many species of birds that call the meadows and forests home. Binoculars will be provided for children and adults. After the hike, you and your child can create a bird feeder and play binoculars to keep the adventure going. Meet at the Nature Center at 1:30 p.m.

Flowers and Their Friends

Sunday, May 6, June 10, July 1, August 12
April Showers bring May Flowers. Come see what is in bloom at the GCV&M Nature Center and learn about the pollinators that keep the earth beautiful, and fed. After the short meadow hike, create pollinator puddles and magic mud to create pollinator patches in your outdoor areas to help bees, butterflies and birds. Meet at the Nature Center at 1:30 p.m.

Mother Nature’s Day

Sunday, May 13
Celebrate mother’s day with your family by enjoying the beauty of mother nature. Join one of our naturalist for a hike around the Nature Center. Learn about how mothers take care of their young and mother nature takes care of us. Meet at the Nature Center at 1:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Fathers in the Forest

Sunday, June 17
Join our naturalists for some father’s day fun. Hike the trails of the nature center with your family enjoying the great outdoors. Explore the world around you and learn about the father’s that live in in the forest and their unique parenting styles. Meet at the Nature Center at 1:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served when we return.

Thicket Game

Sunday, July 22 and 29, August 26, and September 23 and 30
Calling all Earth Campers! Come Join us for a game of Thicket! Similar to hide and seek, this twist on a classic is sure to leave your kids wanting more. Children will be given the opportunity to go off trail and discover the forest like never before. Long pants and closed toe shoes are best. Find out why Thicket is an Earth Camp favorite. Meet at the Nature Center at 1:30 p.m.

Bug Beauty Contest

Sunday, July 15, August 19, September 9
Do you like bugs? Discover what insects are living in the meadow while looking for your entrance into the bug beauty contest. Nets and jars will be provided for safe capture and release. At 2:15 a vote will be held and awards will be given to the “most beautiful,” “oddest,” and “biggest” bug. Prizes to all who participate. Meet at the Nature Center at 1:30 p.m.

Fun with Fall Foliage

Are you looking for something fun to do with your family this fall? Join one of our naturalists for a fall foliage walk to see all of the beautiful autumn colors. Learn about what makes leaves change and make your very own funky fall fedora to show off your fashion sense! Meet at the Nature Center at 1:30 p.m. to be a part of all the fall fun!
