Country, Towns & Trades

Program offered: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays year-round (virtual)

This program is appropriate for Grades 4 – 8.

Explore the variety of work performed by people in a 19th-century community during a virtual tour of the Historic Village. Participants will learn about the trades and the professionals in a village and how people relied on one another for products and survival. Watch as our Village Potter demonstrates how to turn a lump of clay into a useful household container. Visit the Altay Store to discover the important roles general stores played in the life of an 1800s community. Examine our Blacksmith Shop to see the tools of this important profession and watch as a piece of iron is transformed into a useful item. This program links well with units on Westward Expansion, Colonial Towns & Townspeople, and the Interdependent Roles of Colonial Times.

This is a live virtual program hosted by educators at GCV&M via Zoom that can be easily broadcast into your classroom, community center, library, or anywhere you’d like to learn!
