Join us as a youth volunteer!
Is your child too old for camp, but still looking for something to do during summer or spring break? No problem! We offer valuable youth leadership training in the form of a Volunteer Class Assistant Program! Participants in this program will gain hands-on experience working within a nationally accredited living history museum. They will assist with camp activities under the mentorship of one of our experienced camp teachers. In order to qualify, applicants must be at least 15 years old.

FAQs
You must be at least 15 years old to be a camp volunteer. There is no maximum age for volunteers.
No. The preferences of the volunteers will be considered, but you are not guaranteed to get the camp
that you want. If you are only interested in a certain class, for example fishing, then you should consider
enrolling as a camper. We will, however, do our best to honor your preference to be costumed or non-costumed.
Volunteers must commit to at least one full week of camp. Camp runs each day from 10 am until 4 pm.
You are expected to be present for the duration of each day.
If you are on the edge about whether you should be a volunteer or a camper, we recommend spending
another year as a camper. While volunteers do get to participate in some activities, they have many
more responsibilities than campers, and are expected to act as a leader rather than a peer.
As a volunteer you are expected to be a role model for the campers. You will assist the teacher in
gathering supplies, taking campers to the bathroom or nurse, leading activities, and monitoring lunch. If
you are riding the bus as a volunteer, you are expected to help the bus monitor supervise the campers.
Volunteering at GCV&M is an amazing leadership opportunity. Not only can you receive credit for
volunteer hours, but you can list this experience on job resumes and college applications. Many camp
volunteers go on to become camp teachers as well!
While we want to give as many individuals as possible the opportunity to volunteer, it may not always
be possible. We recommend that you get your application in early and are prompt in responding to
email and phone calls. Those who have demonstrated leadership interest and exemplary behavior as
campers will have an advantage. We have a zero-tolerance policy for volunteers that exchange phone
numbers with campers, use inappropriate language, or neglect their responsibilities.
