Complete Ensembles

Lady's Bloomer Ensemble (1855)

From the collections at Cortland County Historical Society

This three-piece ensemble has ties to mother and daughter, Meriva Carpenter (1802-1887) and Malvina Marciana Carpenter (1820-1909). See Meriva Carpenter's self-portrait (1839). It is yet unknown whether both women wore this ensemble or if it were worn by daughter Malvina Marciana Carpenter only.

The jacket, shortened skirt, and bloomers are made from a black wool broadcloth, trimmed with machined velvet ribbon, and velvet applique.
