Wrought in the Past: Stories from a 19th-Century Blacksmith's Box

Saturday, November 16, at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. in Davis Hall

Join Collections Manager Jill Johnson and Manager of Trades Jim Slining in an exploration of a 19th-century blacksmith’s box – and all its fascinating contents! Discover what sets this simple box apart from others of its kind. This talk examines the Caley family history, and their blacksmithing shop which stood in Brighton for over 100 years. Learn more about blacksmithing itself, and how blacksmiths adapted to the advent of the automobile. Enjoy a fall day with us as we explore an important piece of local history!

Jill Johnson enjoys the privilege of working as Collection Manager at Genesee Country & Museum. Her passion for research led her to examine the history of many objects in the collection, which was the basis of her final thesis project at Rochester Institute of Technology. She is excited to be working on the prestigious Smithsonian traveling exhibit, “Voices and Votes” which will be coming to the Museum in June of 2025.

Jim Slining returned last May to the staff at Genesee Country Village and Museum after a 40-year absence. During those years, Jim worked for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (completing a formal 6-year blacksmithing apprenticeship) and at other living history museums. He is also a trained farrier. For two decades he operated a private business providing iron reproductions for many public and private buildings and collections along the east coast. The last ten years found Jim engaged as Curator/Director of Historic Collections and Exhibits at Tillers International, where he also taught blacksmithing and draft animal classes.
