19th Century Civics Day

October 8, 2026

Grades K - 12

This program is for all ages. Programming concepts directly relate to the New York State curriculum for Grades 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 11, & 12 (see the above curriculum connections guide for more details). This self-guided field trip features time programming throughout the Historic Village. Plan for 2 – 4 hours on site.

I Pledge Allegiance

Students can participate in a real Naturalization Ceremony, welcoming new American citizens! This is a moving and joyous ceremony that students should not miss.

Also happening around the Historic Village:

  • Participate in a historical reenactment of a court case on Village Square

  • Speak the speech of the women who pioneered movements that made America

  • Listen to and learn about the African roots of the banjo

  • Take a Citizenship quiz – see if you can answer the same questions every new citizen is expected to know
  • Learn about 19th-century civic leaders with ties to the buildings in our village
  • And more!

The activities above will help answer the following questions:

  • What does democracy mean? And what is the role of government?

  • How have rights and responsibilities changed for citizens since the 19th Century?

  • What was the impact of the 13th, 14th, & 15th amendments?

  • What role did a Town Hall or a town meeting play in 19th-century communities?

  • How can you be a responsible and active citizen in your community?
