Carbine Cartridge Box
Object/Artifact
One leather Federal issue Civil War carbine cartridge box made by J. Davy & Co. in Newark, NJ. Front of leather case lifts to reveal a second flap opening to a compartment where the cartridges were kept. Most likely there was a wood or tin insert to hold them. A third flap opens to a shallow flat compartment that closes with a small leather tab. On the front of the case another leather tab is used to secure it to a brass knob on the bottom. There are two loops on the back that could be secured to a belt and two buckles that could attach to a strap. A horizontal strap is also attached.
