Shawl

Clothing/Dress/Costume

Woven shawl in a muted colorway of various greys and blacks, and white stripes that converge at the corners forming tartan. Twill weave with fringe/tassels on all four edges. Moth-eaten holes across portions of the body, but structurally sounds. The shawl was worn and passed down to the female members of the family as follows: - Worn by Melissa Butts (1824-1910), who married Thomas Hugh Dunlavey Sr. (1819-1897) in 1850. - Passed down to Melissa Dunlavey (1861-1939), who married Frank H. Gossman (1859-1887) in 1885. - Passed down to Ruth Edith Gossman (1886-1979) who married John Jacob Grieb (1883-1956) in 1910.
