James is writing from off the coast of Argentina and describes the Island they are docked at, Isla de los Estados (which they refer to as Staten Land), their living conditions and good health, and how his voyage went. He had fallen on his right wrist and injured it, so is dictating to another man (Stephen Conger) on board the boat. They are hunting seals and expected to be away from New York for two years. The letter goes into detail on the process of hunting seals.
