Pennsylvania dough box with four turned legs, shaped apron, and removeable top.

These boxes were introduced in America by the Pennsylvania Dutch as early as the 1700's. They would remove the top and pour in the bread making ingredients and mix it right in the box. They would knead it on the tabletop/lid portion, put it back in the box, put the top back on, and leave it to rise, sometimes overnight. It would keep the dough warm so it could rise and help protect the dough from pests.
