Hiram Sibley (1807-1888), one of the founders of Western Union Telegraph Company and at one time the richest man in Rochester, began to take an interest in plants after his retirement in 1869. He quickly built up a seed empire with warehouses in Rochester and Chicago and farms in five different states.
