One replica pipe box made by GCM cabinetmaker Jim Altemus and grain painted by his wife Carol. It is designed to rest on a mantel or a table, not hang from a wall. It has two drawers each with a wooden knob and is painted to simulate tiger-maple wood. It has six 1/2" holes in the top to accommodate six long-stemmed pipes. The style is Georgian, mid-18th century, having a broken pediment design incorporated in the crest rail. This piece was generally copied from an original pipe box illustrated in plate #8 of Russell Hawes Kettell's book "The Pine Furniture of Early New England", copyrighted in 1929
