The center pattern shows a person standing on a bank of water with a large tree on the opposite bank and a number of buildings, including temple-like structures. The back is marked in mulberry: "JOHN ALCOCK / VINCENNES / COBRIDGE" and there is an impressed "10" (?).

A humorous transferware platter featuring a scene in which a crowd of women, apparently responding to an advertisement for a wife, overwhelm an older man who fends them off with a chair, while his servant blocks the doorway from additional entrants. The design is based on Thomas Rowlandson's Dr. Syntax prints and publications. The rim is decorated with a floral garland. Within an oblong cartouche on the scene is the title "THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR A WIFE".
