Preparing For Winter Homeschool Day

Explore the Historic Village as preparations begin for the upcoming cold season. Students will learn how the needs and duties of 19th-century New Yorkers changed as they got ready for winter. Discover traditional crafts, harvesting tasks, winterizing homes, and food preparations in the historic kitchens. Homeschoolers will have the opportunity to experience:
- Making a candle to take home
- Listening to a Haudenosaunee storyteller share seasonal tales
- Assisting with a 19th-century recipe in a historic kitchen
- Learning how to make sausage and smoke meats for winter storage without refrigeration
- Activities subject to change
Add a workshop on to your homeschool day experience! Preparing for Winter Homeschool Day tickets must be reserved or purchased in conjunction with all workshop tickets. Parents who wish to stay with their children for a workshop must also purchase a ticket.
Hearth Cooking with Emma | $15 per person | 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Join historic cook Emma as she walks you through a 19th century “receipt” for Christmas Cakes for Good Children. Prepare end enjoy this seasonal treat! This workshop is for ages 7 & up.
Weaving with Kayleigh | $15 per person | 12 – 2 p.m.
Led by historic interpreter Kayleigh, participants will learn about the importance of fiber arts in the 19th century and practice the basics of weaving by making their own mug rugs to take home. This workshop is for ages 10 & up.
Woodcarving with Ben | $15 per person | 1 – 3 p.m.
Become a woodcarving apprentice! Led by historic tradesman and interpreter Ben, participants will whittle their own wooden spoon to take home. This workshop is for ages 12 & up.
