"Day cap, entirely hand stitched linen, edged all around with a narrow-hemmed 1” muslin frill. The cap is flat and basic with a circle crown enlarged slightly with a pieced triangular section added to its base. Also pieced near crown with exquisitely fine seam. Short, woven linen ties. Small size, perhaps one- or two-year old.Overall height in center as viewed, about 6.5”Inked inscription on proper right corner, difficult to decipher: “Emma D. Balsh 2 yrs 1853.” ?? Could it be 1833?"
