James G. Vail Diary, 1871

Archive

1871 diary of James Gardner Vail. There are a few entries by Vail including January 11 when Ella L. Wilkin began working in his gallery. He mentions paying her on serval occasions, an average of $2.50 very week or week and a half. A large portion of the diary was used at a later date, with the latest date being 1889. The pages were used to record the marriages of Libbie Boughton Vail's sisters. Laura Boughton married Frank C. Thompson on September 15, 1887. The passage details the wedding party, her dress, the dinner served, the guest list and the gifts received. The same information is recorded for Carrie Boughton's marriage to Elias Root on October 16, 1889. There is an extensive Boughton family history outlined by Rev. C W Backus and details on all of Libbie's siblings.
