Decoy

Object/Artifact

Driftwood base. 2 wooden decoys 2 Tin decoys Tin decoy is constructed from two halves latched together with small metal rings along one side at head and tail ends. A and B are identically painted on exteriors of both halves: birds' upper bodies are painted brown with white and black spots; gray underbellies; black eyes and beaks. Both are printed with patent information on one interior side: "PAT. OCT. 27, 1874" in yellow ink. These folding decoys were intended to be more convenient for carrying to a hunting site than a conventional set of decoys. This pair of decoys was made by a company owned by Herman Strater Jr. and William Sohier of Boston. Their patent was for "Decoy-Birds for Sportsmen."
