Brooch, Commerative

Brooch, Commerative

Jewelry

painting on ivory, oval, mounted in simple vermeil bezel as a brooch with a slightly convex glass. Head and shoulders of a small child with blond curls parted in the middle, with small spit curls. Blue sky and swirl of clouds around the shoulders. About 2” high by 1 3/4” wide. Much of the shading seems to have been accomplished with a pencil." No indication of the identity but we purchased it on the hunch it was Mary E. Dyer, of the pantalets, and no place in the family tree. The two seem to go together and it suggests she died young and this was her memorial portrait. The man (Gov. Elisha Dyer b. 1839) would have been her brother."
