Carbine Cartridge Box
Object/Artifact
One leather Federal issued Civil War .58 caliber carbine cartridge box, Model 1855 made by S. Young & Co. In Newark, NJ. Front of leather case has a brass "US" cartridge box plate. Under the large outer flap the interior has a second flap over the main compartment which still has the original tin insert inside. A third flap with a leather tab secures a flat pocket on the side. The exterior flap can be secured by a leather tab that a brass stud fits through. There are two straps on the back to secure the box to a belt. There are also two buckles for a shoulder strap. Has a very faint R. White inspector mark on the front.
