Grades K - 12
This program is for all ages. Programming concepts directly relate to the New York State curriculum for Grades 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 11, & 12 (see the above curriculum connections guide for more details).
Students can participate in a real Naturalization Ceremony, welcoming new American citizens! This is a moving and joyous ceremony that students should not miss.
Students can also explore the Historic Village for the following activities:
Participate in a historical reenactment of a court case in Town Hall
Learn about 19th century civic leaders with ties to the buildings in our village
Play games focused on symbolism and the role it plays in our understanding of democracy and how we see the world around us
Hear from an indigenous scholar, Perry Ground, about how Haudenosaunee women inspired the Women’s Movement
The activities above will help answer the following questions:
What does democracy mean? And what is the role of government?
How have rights and responsibilities changed for citizens since the 19th century?
What was the impact of the 13th, 14th, & 15th amendments?
What role did a Town Hall or a town meeting play in 19th century communities?
How can you be a responsible and active citizen in your community?
This self-guided field trip features timed programming throughout the Historic Village. Plan for 2-4 hours on site.
