Preparing for Winter

November 7, 2025

10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Stroll the Historic Village where preparations are underway for the cold season ahead. Students will learn about how the needs and duties of 19-century New Yorkers shifted as they prepared for the season to come. See traditional crafts, harvesting tasks, winterizing homes, and food preparations in the historic kitchens. Activities include:

  • Make a candle to take home!
  • Taste popcorn using a 19th century popcorn popper, cooked over a hearth
  • Listen to a Haudenosaunee storyteller share seasonal stories
  • Assist with a 19th century “receipt” in a historic kitchen
  • Experience how to make sausage and smoke meats to store through the winter without refrigeration
