Preparing for Winter

November 6, 2026

Grades K - 12

Stroll the Historic Village where preparations are underway for the cold season ahead. Students will learn about how the needs and duties of 19-century New Yorkers shifted as they prepared for the season to come. See traditional crafts, harvesting tasks, winterizing homes, and food preparations in the 200-year-old historic kitchens.

Activities include:

  • Make a candle to take home
  • Taste popcorn using a 19th century popcorn popper, cooked over a hearth
  • Listen to a Haudenosaunee storyteller share seasonal stories
  • Assist with a 19th century “receipt” in a historic kitchen
  • Learn how to store smoked meats and sausage through the winter without refrigeration
