Evidence of being folded lengthwise into thirds along the center, and the ends are puckered and distorted, suggesting that it was used as a hat decoration. It also was the size found appealing as sashes for children. 5 1/8" x 38"

Handspun handwoven bleached linen z singles. Huck weave, no border although ther is a group of 2 and one of 3 treadled pwish bands on each side of center. No marks.

Boy’s brown Holland (linen) sacque or jacket. Wide flaring body and long sleeves. Small round collar. Edges outlined with flat white braid. 5 thread buttons and buttonholes in front.

Edges are all scalloped and self-bound and the outer seam of the sleeve has a matching short scalloped ‘fin.’ Neck edge finished with skimpy faux needle lace edging.

Tightly & unevenly spun Z2S silk on looser spun Z singles natural (?) tan silk plain weave ground, M.I.D (and clorox-tested as well). The colors include a healthy indigo blue (probably) with faded dyewood pinks, tans and yellows (probably); the dyes are not even and did not penetrate the entire thread. Cross stitch, unevenly controlled. Large UC, small UC, LC, large script alphabets; numerals, various dividing lines. Lower area has federal house with clinging vine, fence with gates, bowl of flowers and floating birds on twigs on either side. “Mary Swan” and “Mary J Swans samplar age 11.” Geometric strawberry border, 4 sides. 1/4” hem on all 4 sides. Approximately 13.5” wide x 16” high. Seems it might be an entirely home-made production from worm to wall.

Square cross stitch sampler. There are three distinguished sections of the canvas. The top has the alphabet in all capital letters and numbers 1-12. Underneath the three lines is a vertical zig-zag line. The middle section is stitched, "Mary Vanvalken: B / Urch: Sept: 29: 1820 / 10 Year" the last line is ended with a heart, u-z &. The line seperating the next section is in non-connected x's. The bottom section has a-t in lowercase letters followed by three lines of script capital letters.

The topmost is a 5” wide tapestry band (composed of 2 horizontal bands joined to create symmetrical design) with pale blue, pale green, olive, white and yellow horizontally symmetrical abstract designs on a red ground (red warp). The next is 2” wide with a finer leafy scroll variation with red, pink, olive, yellow and black on a white ground (red warp); has two narrow black borders. Four gates with 1/2” self fringes: yellow, black, turquoise, red with wool (?) and cotton embroidered details; related embroidered details on black along top border. Woven shawl in a muted colorway of various greys and blacks, and white stripes that converge at the corners forming tartan. Twill weave with fringe/tassels on all four edges. Moth-eaten holes across portions of the body, but structurally sounds. The shawl was worn and passed down to the female members of the family as follows: - Worn by Melissa Butts (1824-1910), who married Thomas Hugh Dunlavey Sr. (1819-1897) in 1850. - Passed down to Melissa Dunlavey (1861-1939), who married Frank H. Gossman (1859-1887) in 1885. - Passed down to Ruth Edith Gossman (1886-1979) who married John Jacob Grieb (1883-1956) in 1910.

Fine India muslin embroidered in white cotton with some Chikan stitches (stems) plus padded satin stitch, tambour, knots, and modest drawn thread work. Pattern emulates cone motifs and borders of Kashmir shawls: 4 cones with extra leaflet dangling from tip, across ends; narrow borders up sides of acanthus and leaf vine. Corner cones. Appears to be ‘Anglo-Indian’ work.
