Cross-over closure of hook and eyes, which reveals a center front closure of hook and eyes. Bodice lined entirely in brown cotton PW glazed fabric. Baleen stays found on the center back, side, and the center front. Hooks at the center back that suggest use of a small train or vestigial bustle.

Bodice shirred at lower center front. Only scanty stitching suggests false back seam. Front opening with purple silk covered buttons and buttonholes. Full bishop sleeves with mancherons and large, slightly flared cuffs. Piped armscyes and neckline. Purple ruched silk bands applied to edges of mancherons and cuffs. Waistband. Boned at sides and 2 darts each side of the center front. Lined with thin white PW cotton. Floating at front opening. Brass hooks and eyes.

Machine and hand-stitched bodice made of thin silk taffeta on a muslin lining. Fine black ikat streaks with green checks. Oddly soft, flexible bones. Narrow coat sleeves. High, round neckline with narrow standing collar. Dome buttons covered with similar ribbed silk having fine black ikat streaks. Accompanied by what appears to be the remains of an unlined capelet. A bias band and 3 self ornaments, only one of which retains its center button.

Machine-stitched bodice from a 2-piece dress (skirt was not accessioned due to condition). Bodice is made of heavy dark brown cotton / mohair warp and bright orange mohair weft (microscope ID). It is heavy and stiff. Front opening. Drop shoulders. Slim coat sleeves. Curved yoke effect created with double row of black velvet ribbon above a row of deep, black silk fringe. Carried to armscye in back. Similar treatment of cuffs. Large goldstone and black glass conical buttons. Interlined with brown glazed cotton.

Lady's day bodice made of silk damask in a deep reddish-brown colorway, almost wine or oxblood. The damask features an Orientalism design of stylized medallions, goldfish, and smoky tendrils. The bodice is cut with a long, pointed torso shaped by two darts vertically placed up and down to the abdomen into the bust, with one horizontal dart at the waist on each side. The center front opening of the hook and eyes. Edges are bound in a wine-red velvet, made from silk. Faux buttons adorn the bodice flanking vertically down each bust as well as at each sleeve cap and wrist up-turned cuff - possibly a later addition in the 1860s. The bodice features large bell sleeves cut from two pieces, with a sleeve cap at each shoulder. Sloping shoulder lines. Up-turned cuff at each wrist, with glazed cotton facing. Sleeves lined with burgundy silk satin to to cuff, and then lined with brown glazed cotton, same as bodice interior. The neckline and shoulder seams have pipping. Skirt is not present.

Two piece reception gown of cream colored silk with satin stripes of varying widths, brocaded design of leaf sprays, and scattered floral motifs (nosegays) in cream and pink. Bodice - Fitted, boned bodice cut to points at front and back, with peplum added over the hips and pleated at center back, lacing up the front to deep, square neckline. Narrow elbow-length sleeves. Neckline and sleeves trimmed with heavy double frill of cream Binche-like lace, held at center with heavy pink cording. Fabric dates to 1770-80, probably closer to 1780. Original back seams, peplum on the back was attached with chainstitch machine (post 1855), cording and lace not original (19th century or later); has been reworked several times SKIRT IS MISSING FROM DONATION (may be located by donor and brought to GCVM at later date)

Equally hand-stitched and machine-stitched girl's bodice made of printed silk with a pattern of diamonds. The design is a cluster of flowers in the center, and a dot and dash pattern between the large diamonds. The ground is black, the diamond, dots, and dashes are striped in several shades of brown, and the flowers are green, beige, and pinkish red. The bodice has small cap sleeves with the fabric loosely gathered to create puffiness (although this has flattened over time). A thin pink braided trim added to the ruffles, the tops of the sleeves, and it highlights the plain, curved neckline. The main body of the bodice has vertical pleats. Lined with brown cotton, and has hooks and eyes closure.

Entirely hand-stitched bodice made of cotton. Pattern consists of a white ground and two printed stripes. One stripe, in brown and blue, with a very delicate light and dark brown foliage design. Large solid blue flowers decorate throughout these areas. The second stripe is more narrow and is smaller in scale, but printed with heavier lines and bolder colors such as dark and light brown, green, pink, and red. The pattern is tightly packed with florals and paisley-esque design. The bodice has short sleeves with a scalloped edge, and the body of the piece has two bands of the fabric from the shoulders crossing to the center of the chest. It is lined with white cotton Hooks and eye closures.

The deep point is at the center front, and the shallow point is at the center back, which is a crisscross lacing closure with hand-bound eyelets. Ties (black) are not original to the bodice. Short sleeves, and "bertha" overlay. The bodice is lined with brown glazed cotton. Boning made of baleen at the center front, sides, and back lacing. Chenille trimming across bodice and sleeves, consisting of netted fringe with triple pom-poms hanging every 2". Underarm stains.

Wedding bodice made from pale creme wool, in a twill weave. Tailored by shaped panels and darts. CF closure of fabric covered round buttons. CF pleated panel with faux lapels, tails, and cuffs on sleeves made form dark tan twill cotton, brushed. Cuffs, and lapels and tails machine-embroidered with sprigs in pale colorway. High round neckline with stand collar. Collar and sleeves filled in with machine embroidered netting. Lined with brown glazed cotton twill. NO stays. Inner hook and eye waist panel. Long tight sleeves, 3/4 length, cut with curve at elbow, 2-pieces. Machine-sewn with hand finishing. Some staining, and holes in wool in parts. Missing skirt. Came with hand-written note that reads: "Wedding dress waist worn with matching skirt by Jennie Kate (Kittie) Hoffman at her marriage to Nathtanial Hucke III June 4, 1885. Also wedding stockings."

Partly hand-stitched bodice made of black silk faille. Short stand collar neckline. The center front opening of buttons covered in black crochet work with beaded detail in crochet work. Buttonholes are machine-stitched. Bodice is made of shaped panels, coming to points at the center front and the center back. The center back is flanked by two small bows of black silk with frayed ends. Sleeves are long and narrow, with a slight widening at the sleeve cap. They are both ruched. The cuffs trim is made up of black braiding and beads. Both breasts have a vertical pleating detail, from which hang five tassels that are beaded in spirals. More beaded braiding up both side of the upper breast. Interior is lined with brown plain weave cotton. Waist tape is made of cotton tape.

Black silk damask bodice - missing skirt Bodice is made from a damask silk satin fabric with a stylized paisley pattern. The bodice has a round stand collar which closed with hook and eyes. The CF side closure of hooks and eye, both on the lining and on the side of the silk satin. Yoke of pleated black silk ar upper chest and extends into collar stand. Long sleeve, slightly curved. No cuff or sleeve cap puff. Pigeion breast or monobossom is gone by this time. Shoulder and down sides of chest have buttons. The bottom of the bodice has a black satin belt. Inside of lined with a black glazed cotton, and underarms have white cotton flannel underarm protectors. Stays at CF, CB, and sides.

Bodice (tunic) of a young child's outfit made of semi-sheer off-white cotton. Back fastening with mother-of-pearl buttons. Scalloped ruffle with handmachine embroidery around neck, gathered into bias band collar. Center front of bodice has a tuck pressed into a box pleat, with insertion of handmachine-embroidered strips on either side; seven tucks on either side of this, pressed toward center. Likewise, six tucks on either side of back, pressed toward center. Unshaped skirt pleated to bodice, with seam covered with a narrow bias band. Long sleeves, gathered by hand above hem to create ruffles.

Partly machined-stitched and hand-stitched lady's bodice made of pale cream silk taffeta. Tailored by shaped panels rather than darts. Seams are piped with self-fabric, while the bottom front hem is double-piped. Lined with pale glazed cotton, with cotton waist tape inside. Modesty panels at the center back to hide the center back lacing. Two hooks and eyes help secure down the center back. Baleen stays at the center front, sides, and the center back. Short sleeves covered with ruched fabric. Pinholes at side seams and shoulder - this was widened at some point. One original tie remains, with cotton ties attached at the center back top for closure of top.

Entirely hand stitched printed cotton shortgown. Design is brown ground with white evergreen-tree-like reserves filled with an arrow shape black on one side and red on the other. Blue threads in selvage. Stitched mostly with what appears to be unbleached linen thread or white linen. Rectangular form, one piece for body with tubular sleeves attached selvage-to-selvage. Little gores in side hip. Appled casing inside for heavy plied cotton drawstring; back is strip of discharge indigo print; front is checked cotton. Narrow PW linen tape drawstring through round neckline casing; bit of blue/white stripe added to reinforce stress at back neck; tucks and mends also. Under arms were fitted with pieced strips to enlarge circumference. Neatly fitted.

Girl’s sunbonnet made of thin light blue plain weave cotton, entirely hand stitched. The front edge of the crown is gathered over cord and attached to the brim which is stiffened with scalloped rows of cording, the front edge cut in scallops with buttonholed finish. The curtain is gathered over cord with a simple narrow hem. Self-faced, lined with coarse white cotton (hand woven?). Tiny trace of original tape tie on one side. The crown is shaped with a doubly-curved dart up the center back. Given the appearance of the blue, it looks like maybe a Prussian blue.

Entirely hand-stitched mourning bonnet. Deep cylindrical buckram crown, flaring pasteboard brim covered inside and outside with fine black silk satin, and the edge finished with satin. The crown top is covered with satin. The sides have soft, vertical folds of satin, and along the top edge is a wide satin band edged with folded black tulle, arranged in puffs all around, anchored with false knots of satin. A triple bow-knot of black satin ribbon on either side of the front. Folds of satin conceal the joint of the brim and crown. One-inch-wide black satin ribbon ties are attached.

In the front with wide silk taffeta ribbon extended into long ties, one end with a straight end, the other rounded. Fine leghorn bonnet of tunnel shape with wired brim and self bavolet as extension of front bim edge to the back. Shaker bonnet and cover with storage mold. 1. Woven light colored straw bonnet, tubular form, long brown sheer cotton bavolet. Unlined; paper label stamped with large “14” inside crown. Brim edge is curved a little toward chin. Crown pleated simply into base; woven straw binding on edges; interior edges covered with strips of blue paper. Long chain stitch on edging. 2. Roll of batting wrapped with cheesecloth and tissue paper, support for bonnet.

Black silk faille Quaker bonnet, wire frame with cardboard brim. Coarse cotton netting in crown of bonnet, with brim lined with China silk and strip of muslin. Silk faille ties hanging from bonnet. Ties of bonnet are machine-sewn down sides. No bavolet. The rest is hand sewn and hand finished. Small stain on China silk lining, and hole in silk faille tie on left-hand side.

Tie-less bonnet of white cotton percale. Stiffened around the edges with four rows of thick cording; also stiffened with groups of five rows of narrower cording around the crown and across the brim. The only piecing in the bonnet is the seam between the back and the brim; there is a group of five rows of cording around the seam on the brim side, and four rows on the back side, then a very small circle of four rows of cording at the center. Hand sewn.

Quaker bonnet made from celadon silk taffeta over wire frame, cardboard brim, with bavolet and crown lined with stiff cotton (?) honeycomb netting - appears machined netting. Machine sewn seams, with some hand finishing. Lining of pale cream China silk is partially missing, with split in cardboard and green outer silk as well in spots. Sides of bonnet has small dips on sides. Bow of same green silk is separated from bonnet.

Lady's black straw braided bonnet, "lacey." Very small and shallow crown, with large brim that is longer than it is wide. Small crown is lined with black tarlatan, with back brim turned up with showcase small rosette of black machine bobbin lace. Perhaps a late mourning bonnet, but more likely stylish black. Came with hand-written note that states: "Belonged to Bets Knudson grandmother Bets gave it to Vi (donor's grandmother, Viola White)."

Entirely hand-stitched bonnet made of dark yellow silk. Simply quilted with white lining and very thin filling. Deep crown; frill formed at front edge by drawstring through edge; drawstring through bottom edge ties in back. 1.5” wide yellow ribbon ties attached well inside.

Fine leghorn with deep brim angled slightly to deep crown; sides dip down; straw ‘bavolet.’ No lining. Wire around front edge. Original ribbon still attached in two twisted rows across bonnet with little bows at each ear. Ribbon bavolet. Only one tie remains. Ribbon is about 1.25” wide; white and [now] celadon green ombre with narrow borders of green and red florets.
