English midlands bone lace bobbin with simple turnings, red grooves; stippled black and red message: "A New Year's Gift". Spangle beads: 1 large blue one and 2 each blue and colorless bugles. Length minus spangle.

Machined-stitched with some signs of hand-stitching bodice made of Voided velvet. Small puffed-sleeve caps. Standing collar made of silk rep fabric. Cross-over closure of hook and eyes, which reveals a center front closure of hook and eyes. Bodice lined entirely in brown cotton PW glazed fabric. Baleen stays found on the center back, side, and the center front. Hooks at the center back that suggest use of a small train or vestigial bustle.

Bodice or polonaise,princess seaming, machine stitched, made of Hamburg lace, a form of machine embroidery made of tiny lacy wheels- expensive. Off white or beige, interlined with matching thin cotton. Fitted to the hips, cut away at center front. Long, tight sleeves with lace edge frill cuffs. Lace border on hem. High bound neckline. Small watch pocket on proper left. Stamped silvery buttons.

Entirely hand-stitched evening bodice made of black silk taffeta. Wide neckline with short sleeves with ruffles. Concealed front hook and eye opening. Tan cotton lining. Stitch holes remaining from absent ribbon. Trim around sleeve edge and also on frill between hem and top edge. Slightly pointed waist.

Entirely hand-stitched bodice made of black silk taffeta. High neckline. Long straight 2-piece sleeves. Black velvet non-functioning buttons down the center front over concealed hook-and eye opening. Tan cotton lining.

Entirely machine-stitched bodice made of ivory silk grosgrain. Lined with white cotton twill. Whale bones at the center front, and side. Sides have twill tape casing. Wide short bell sleeves with undersleeves of net for foundation for frills. Bone down center back with lacing eyelets and a few pair of brass hooks and eyes. Low neck.

Bodice made of blue, lavender and brownish purple brocade silk. Wide neckline. Short flared sleeves. Back opening. Brown and gold fringe trim on sleeves. Purple and brown ball tassel on each shoulder. Bust padded.

Entirely hand-stitched bodice made of lavender silk printed with scattered blossoms in black and 2 shades each of brown, magenta, purple and green in block print. High neckline. Dropped shoulders. Bodice shirred at lower center front. Only scanty stitching suggests false back seam. Front opening with purple silk covered buttons and buttonholes. Full bishop sleeves with mancherons and large, slightly flared cuffs. Piped armscyes and neckline. Purple ruched silk bands applied to edges of mancherons and cuffs. Waistband. Boned at sides and 2 darts each side of the center front. Lined with thin white PW cotton. Floating at front opening. Brass hooks and eyes.

Entirely hand-stitched bodice made of sheer white cotton muslin. Triple frilled short sleeves. Wide shallow neckline. Fabric gathered at the center front at the waist and spreads to a 2” band of embroidered muslin which forms edge of neckline. Separate underbodice with drawstring at the center front. Hooks and eyes closure. Boned originally.

Machine and hand-stitched bodice made of thin silk taffeta on a muslin lining. Fine black ikat streaks with green checks. Oddly soft, flexible bones. Narrow coat sleeves. High, round neckline with narrow standing collar. Dome buttons covered with similar ribbed silk having fine black ikat streaks. Accompanied by what appears to be the remains of an unlined capelet. A bias band and 3 self ornaments, only one of which retains its center button.

Machine-stitched bodice from a 2-piece dress (skirt was not accessioned due to condition). Bodice is made of heavy dark brown cotton / mohair warp and bright orange mohair weft (microscope ID). It is heavy and stiff. Front opening. Drop shoulders. Slim coat sleeves. Curved yoke effect created with double row of black velvet ribbon above a row of deep, black silk fringe. Carried to armscye in back. Similar treatment of cuffs. Large goldstone and black glass conical buttons. Interlined with brown glazed cotton.

Bodice made of gold silk grosgrain. High round neck. Hook and eye front closure. The yoke and sleeves are adorned with brown lace trim. The yoke has a 'W' pattern on the front and stacked lace on the cuffs. Cuffs trimmed with narrow border of black beads.

Entirely machine-stitched bodice made of cream colored silk grosgrain with robin’s egg blue trim and bows. V neck with standing frill, tails, and 3/4 sleeves. The tails were either pieced or added. Buttons relocated.

Machine-stitched and hand-finished bodice made of blue and black weft wide striped silk brocade. Baleen bones in bodice darts. Round waist. Front opening with buttonholes and velvet-covered modern button forms. Moderate coat-like sleeves. Narrow standing collar. Brown cotton twill lining with short, hooked flaps inside at the waist (to relieve the strain on the buttons).

Entirely hand-stitched bodice made of printed cotton with bold blue stripe overprinted with little blue ovals. Lined with white cotton. 3 boned darts in each side. Real side back seams. Buttons closure; all (10) buttons missing. High round neckline. Roomy ‘coat’ sleeves trimmed with bands of gathered blue silk ribbon at cuffs. Bust improver on left side. Watch pocket.

Entirely hand-stitched bodice made of soft black silk. The colorful pattern is widely-spaced printed paisley-esque medallions. High round neckline. Slightly curved waistline. Concealed hook center front closure. Faux side back seam. Lined with brown cambric cotton. 3 boned darts in front; bone in the center back. Watch pocket. Full bishop sleeves pleated into armscye. Trimmed along cuffs with fancy black silk fringe having complementary colored floral sections. Buttons made of colored silk thread loops surround by black thread loops.

Partly hand-stitched bodice made of brown gingham. Fabric gathered into center front and center back waistband. White cotton lining floats in front; boned and hooked. Mother of pearl buttons and buttonholes in front. High round neckline. Coat-like sleeves have double self frill on cuff (this part is machine-sewn). The self frills encircles the armscyes and describes a round yoke shape on front.

Entirely hand-stitched day bodice made of brown twilled cotton (Microscope ID). Lined with unbleached glazed plain weave cotton or linen. Sleeveless. Generous rounded collar with nice standing effect. Waistband. No bust darts. Concealed hooks and eyes closure; the hooks are set closer to the center front in the middle so as to provide a little bust room (for a larger waist or maternity wear).

Entirely machine-stitched bodice from a 2-piece dress (skirt was not accessioned due to condition) made of gold brocade silk. Short puffed sleeves. High-waisted with point. Crosswise pleated drapes on bust. Centered with double self braid trim. Short puffed sleeves with tucked tops.

Lady's day bodice made of silk damask in a deep reddish-brown colorway, almost wine or oxblood. The damask features an Orientalism design of stylized medallions, goldfish, and smoky tendrils. The bodice is cut with a long, pointed torso shaped by two darts vertically placed up and down to the abdomen into the bust, with one horizontal dart at the waist on each side. The center front opening of the hook and eyes. Edges are bound in a wine-red velvet, made from silk. Faux buttons adorn the bodice flanking vertically down each bust as well as at each sleeve cap and wrist up-turned cuff - possibly a later addition in the 1860s. The bodice features large bell sleeves cut from two pieces, with a sleeve cap at each shoulder. Sloping shoulder lines. Up-turned cuff at each wrist, with glazed cotton facing. Sleeves lined with burgundy silk satin to to cuff, and then lined with brown glazed cotton, same as bodice interior. The neckline and shoulder seams have pipping. Skirt is not present.

Bodice made of white linen covered with white organdy. Huge, short puffed sleeves of organdy alone. The openings are bound with thin aqua silk satin (like a charmeuse) to match the dagged bertha that extends well over the sleeves. Round, high waisted. Drapery angled across bust. Hooks and eyes closure in back.

Entirely hand-stitched bodice made of pale aqua silk satin. Wide shallow neckline with self-bertha pointed deeply at the center front and over the sleeves, which are missing. Pleated horizontal drapery over the bust. Piped seams. Neckline edged with same blonde lace used on sleeves of wedding gown.

Entirely hand-stitched girl’s bodice made of black silk taffeta. Lined with brown glazed plain weave cotton. Wide “low” neckline with flaring short sleeves. Some gathering at the center front waistline. Set-in waistband. Back opening with flat brass hooks and eyes.

Entirely hand-stitched bodice made of olive gold silk taffeta. The bodice has a high neckline. Gathers from shoulder brought to center front pointed waist, and retained with 4 rows of shirring. Center back opening with flat brass hooks and eyes. Long straight sleeves with self-binding. Piped armscyes and neckline; bones in back, center front; none in casings. 9 1-2” from center front neckline to center front waistline. Capelet has high piped neckline and piped shoulder seams. Bottom edged with matching 1” fringed silk braid. Lined with tan PW cotton. Capelet has a few spots on the front and back.

Small bodice made of navy blue and white pinstriped silk taffeta. The back opening has 4 black crocheted ball buttons. The lining is unusually heavy and stiff made of unbleached linen.

Black and brown Birdseye tweed bodice with ikat print silk panels with machine lace detailing along cuffs and around mutton sleeves. Structural boning inside. High collar.

Two piece reception gown of cream colored silk with satin stripes of varying widths, brocaded design of leaf sprays, and scattered floral motifs (nosegays) in cream and pink. Bodice - Fitted, boned bodice cut to points at front and back, with peplum added over the hips and pleated at center back, lacing up the front to deep, square neckline. Narrow elbow-length sleeves. Neckline and sleeves trimmed with heavy double frill of cream Binche-like lace, held at center with heavy pink cording. Fabric dates to 1770-80, probably closer to 1780. Original back seams, peplum on the back was attached with chainstitch machine (post 1855), cording and lace not original (19th century or later); has been reworked several times SKIRT IS MISSING FROM DONATION (may be located by donor and brought to GCVM at later date)

Equally hand-stitched and machine-stitched girl's bodice made of printed silk with a pattern of diamonds. The design is a cluster of flowers in the center, and a dot and dash pattern between the large diamonds. The ground is black, the diamond, dots, and dashes are striped in several shades of brown, and the flowers are green, beige, and pinkish red. The bodice has small cap sleeves with the fabric loosely gathered to create puffiness (although this has flattened over time). A thin pink braided trim added to the ruffles, the tops of the sleeves, and it highlights the plain, curved neckline. The main body of the bodice has vertical pleats. Lined with brown cotton, and has hooks and eyes closure.

Entirely hand-stitched bodice made of cotton. Pattern consists of a white ground and two printed stripes. One stripe, in brown and blue, with a very delicate light and dark brown foliage design. Large solid blue flowers decorate throughout these areas. The second stripe is more narrow and is smaller in scale, but printed with heavier lines and bolder colors such as dark and light brown, green, pink, and red. The pattern is tightly packed with florals and paisley-esque design. The bodice has short sleeves with a scalloped edge, and the body of the piece has two bands of the fabric from the shoulders crossing to the center of the chest. It is lined with white cotton Hooks and eye closures.

Entirely hand-stitched lady's evening bodice made of silk taffeta. The bodice is tailored using darts. The deep point is at the center front, and the shallow point is at the center back, which is a crisscross lacing closure with hand-bound eyelets. Ties (black) are not original to the bodice. Short sleeves, and "bertha" overlay. The bodice is lined with brown glazed cotton. Boning made of baleen at the center front, sides, and back lacing. Chenille trimming across bodice and sleeves, consisting of netted fringe with triple pom-poms hanging every 2". Underarm stains.

Wedding bodice made from pale creme wool, in a twill weave. Tailored by shaped panels and darts. CF closure of fabric covered round buttons. CF pleated panel with faux lapels, tails, and cuffs on sleeves made form dark tan twill cotton, brushed. Cuffs, and lapels and tails machine-embroidered with sprigs in pale colorway. High round neckline with stand collar. Collar and sleeves filled in with machine embroidered netting. Lined with brown glazed cotton twill. NO stays. Inner hook and eye waist panel. Long tight sleeves, 3/4 length, cut with curve at elbow, 2-pieces. Machine-sewn with hand finishing. Some staining, and holes in wool in parts. Missing skirt. Came with hand-written note that reads: "Wedding dress waist worn with matching skirt by Jennie Kate (Kittie) Hoffman at her marriage to Nathtanial Hucke III June 4, 1885. Also wedding stockings."

Partly hand-stitched bodice made of black silk faille. Short stand collar neckline. The center front opening of buttons covered in black crochet work with beaded detail in crochet work. Buttonholes are machine-stitched. Bodice is made of shaped panels, coming to points at the center front and the center back. The center back is flanked by two small bows of black silk with frayed ends. Sleeves are long and narrow, with a slight widening at the sleeve cap. They are both ruched. The cuffs trim is made up of black braiding and beads. Both breasts have a vertical pleating detail, from which hang five tassels that are beaded in spirals. More beaded braiding up both side of the upper breast. Interior is lined with brown plain weave cotton. Waist tape is made of cotton tape.

Entirely machine-stitched and crocheted bodice made of grey silk satin with matching grey crotchet overlay; with crotchet applique. Sleeves are full length with most volume at top of sleeves. Tall high neck collar and sleeve cuffs have red silk velvet trim. The center back closure of hook and eyes. Pigeon breast at the center front.

Black silk damask bodice - missing skirt Bodice is made from a damask silk satin fabric with a stylized paisley pattern. The bodice has a round stand collar which closed with hook and eyes. The CF side closure of hooks and eye, both on the lining and on the side of the silk satin. Yoke of pleated black silk ar upper chest and extends into collar stand. Long sleeve, slightly curved. No cuff or sleeve cap puff. Pigeion breast or monobossom is gone by this time. Shoulder and down sides of chest have buttons. The bottom of the bodice has a black satin belt. Inside of lined with a black glazed cotton, and underarms have white cotton flannel underarm protectors. Stays at CF, CB, and sides.

Grey and white pinstripe bodice made of thin silk taffeta. Cuffs, yoke, and standing collar have an overlay of black lace bobbinet lace and are trimmed in what appears to be machine white lace edging. Lined entirely by a plain weave cotton glazed fabric. Seams are finished by pinking. Stays around the bodice. Hook and eye closure at the center front with a crossover at the neck yoke.

Day bodice with high turn-down collar made of midnight blue burnout velvet with a floral design. Lined entirely with brown glazed PW cotton. Inner waist lining of hooks and eyes. Natural waist comes to a slight point at. The center front closure of hooks and eyes but missing all buttons. Full length 'coat' sleeves, without cuff or closure.

Bodice (tunic) of a young child's outfit made of semi-sheer off-white cotton. Back fastening with mother-of-pearl buttons. Scalloped ruffle with handmachine embroidery around neck, gathered into bias band collar. Center front of bodice has a tuck pressed into a box pleat, with insertion of handmachine-embroidered strips on either side; seven tucks on either side of this, pressed toward center. Likewise, six tucks on either side of back, pressed toward center. Unshaped skirt pleated to bodice, with seam covered with a narrow bias band. Long sleeves, gathered by hand above hem to create ruffles.

Partly machined-stitched and hand-stitched lady's bodice made of pale cream silk taffeta. Tailored by shaped panels rather than darts. Seams are piped with self-fabric, while the bottom front hem is double-piped. Lined with pale glazed cotton, with cotton waist tape inside. Modesty panels at the center back to hide the center back lacing. Two hooks and eyes help secure down the center back. Baleen stays at the center front, sides, and the center back. Short sleeves covered with ruched fabric. Pinholes at side seams and shoulder - this was widened at some point. One original tie remains, with cotton ties attached at the center back top for closure of top.

Entirely hand stitched printed cotton shortgown. Design is brown ground with white evergreen-tree-like reserves filled with an arrow shape black on one side and red on the other. Blue threads in selvage. Stitched mostly with what appears to be unbleached linen thread or white linen. Rectangular form, one piece for body with tubular sleeves attached selvage-to-selvage. Little gores in side hip. Appled casing inside for heavy plied cotton drawstring; back is strip of discharge indigo print; front is checked cotton. Narrow PW linen tape drawstring through round neckline casing; bit of blue/white stripe added to reinforce stress at back neck; tucks and mends also. Under arms were fitted with pieced strips to enlarge circumference. Neatly fitted.

Entirely hand stitched white cotton waist. Cut in one piece with fagoting at shoulder. Neck has elliptical facing front and back. Wide hem at front closure and bottom; center. back reinforcement. White china buttons at center front and 7 more around bottom. Edged with narrow machine lace at neck and sleeve.

Grey (once blue) pasteboard with "genuine bone stiletto and bodkin" printed on it. Turned stiletto with flat bodkin, no other marks. Card 2.5 x 4.25

Bodkin, 14K gold, flat with long eye within shaped portion above the shaft. Single mark that looks like a hawk or eagle head, but could be anything. 2" long. French, 1830-1841??? Seems probable that this was once part of a set such as the one shown on eBay here.

Blue silk taffeta bonnet drawn on 6 canes ribs; matching blue silk taffeta ribbon ties.

Girl’s sunbonnet made of thin light blue plain weave cotton, entirely hand stitched. The front edge of the crown is gathered over cord and attached to the brim which is stiffened with scalloped rows of cording, the front edge cut in scallops with buttonholed finish. The curtain is gathered over cord with a simple narrow hem. Self-faced, lined with coarse white cotton (hand woven?). Tiny trace of original tape tie on one side. The crown is shaped with a doubly-curved dart up the center back. Given the appearance of the blue, it looks like maybe a Prussian blue.

Girl's bonnet; wired buckram base; peaked raised brim; covered with bands of ruched red satin alternating with bands of straw and silk woven in an openwork plaid pattern; the bavolet is made of the red satin edged with straw band; the rim, bavoet and crown are bordered with a row of crystal and black seed beads; no ties.

Bonnet Pink taffeta crown gathered to form neck ruffle and decorated with net and silk covered buttons and double row of braid at the bottom of the ruffle. Bow at top of ruffle at back of neck. Crown turned back at the front and faced with quilted satin, scalloped and trimmed with double row of braid at the edge. 2 ribbons. Said to be a wedding bonnet? H 2l 3/4" W 10"

Entirely hand-stitched mourning bonnet. Deep cylindrical buckram crown, flaring pasteboard brim covered inside and outside with fine black silk satin, and the edge finished with satin. The crown top is covered with satin. The sides have soft, vertical folds of satin, and along the top edge is a wide satin band edged with folded black tulle, arranged in puffs all around, anchored with false knots of satin. A triple bow-knot of black satin ribbon on either side of the front. Folds of satin conceal the joint of the brim and crown. One-inch-wide black satin ribbon ties are attached.

Fanchon bonnet made of lacy white braided horsehair banded across the back with folds of lilac velvet ribbon. In the front with wide silk taffeta ribbon extended into long ties, one end with a straight end, the other rounded. Decoration at center front with deep red, purple, and shaded pink velvet anemones, two velvet leaves and a spray of white flowers like baby's breath, and a bit of grass.

Entirely hand-stitched bonnet made of white cotton. Cylinder formed crown with casings; drawstrings around the circumference; inserted circle of Marseilles quilting to which the cylinder is gathered. A corded brim which might have had a deeper brim originally, muslin frill around back edge.

Cream silk faille outer shell lined with sky blue silk. Tucked casings for canes. Funnel shape, circular brim. Self bavolet with tarlatan underlining, as in crown. MALL (?) and Herrick pencilled on tarlatan. Replaced ribbon ties.

Entirely hand stitched white cotton, cording around crown, drawn rather tightly around ‘face.’ Drawstring at face. Bavolet with 1” hem on 3 sides, possibly replaced.

Entirely hand stitched. Thin gauzy green wool (barege). Drawn on cane strips. Deep box pleated bavolet attached so top edge forms frill. Box pleated ruching trim on brim and crown. No lining. Recently added ribbon (looks like polyester). .

Light golden brown silk taffeta drawn bonnet. Tall crown with flange at top, wide brim at angle to crown. Disc of tarlatan inside top of crown. Ribs are fine but seem to be almost rubbery-perhabs fine splits of cane. Brim edge of strong wire. Self fabric forms certain or bavolet. Soft satin ribbon of similar hue attached at front base of crown, forming ties. May or may not be period.

Bonnet cover made of shot silk, gold and red to give coppery color. Edges bound with brown and black ribbon which shows inside as well. Small bow on front and back. Lined with brown glazed cotton. No ribbon ties. Rim is gathered a little.

Fine leghorn bonnet of tunnel shape with wired brim and self bavolet as extension of front bim edge to the back. Original brocade ribbon in shaded red and green wound across top and forming bavolet over the straw one, and a bow on proper right. Different shaded red brocade ribbon ties, about 12” long. Paper lining in back.

Bonnet of black satin, vaguely bonnet shape but meant to sit somewhat on top of the head. Small crown with flaring brim edged with pleated satin; ribbon twisted around base of crown forms multiple loop bow in crown front. Long heavy satin ribbon ties.

Girl’s bonnet, entirely hand stitched pink silk taffeta, drawn over canes with pleated double edge frill around a peaked brim. Stiffened bavolet. Lined with coarse tarlatan and buckram. One rosette of narrow matching pink ribbon pinned to proper left inside chin point.

Shaker bonnet and cover with storage mold. 1. Woven light colored straw bonnet, tubular form, long brown sheer cotton bavolet. Unlined; paper label stamped with large “14” inside crown. Brim edge is curved a little toward chin. Crown pleated simply into base; woven straw binding on edges; interior edges covered with strips of blue paper. Long chain stitch on edging. 2. Roll of batting wrapped with cheesecloth and tissue paper, support for bonnet.

Child's winter bonnet or hood made from hand-crocheted wool in a red colorway. Brim area and crown is made form loops of red yarn. Silk ribbon is drawn across back and hangs on either side for trying. Unlined.

Straw bonnet with dark blue fine grosgrain bows; velvet ties and area for "bun."

One black bonnet with rosette-like bow on the front and single bow on the back. Long streamer-like ribbons descend from the back bow. The body of the bonnet is pleated and folded. The brim is held in place by wire. The inner crown is lined with silk and some of the stiffening is visible.

Black silk faille Quaker bonnet, wire frame with cardboard brim. Coarse cotton netting in crown of bonnet, with brim lined with China silk and strip of muslin. Silk faille ties hanging from bonnet. Ties of bonnet are machine-sewn down sides. No bavolet. The rest is hand sewn and hand finished. Small stain on China silk lining, and hole in silk faille tie on left-hand side.

Tie-less bonnet of white cotton percale. Stiffened around the edges with four rows of thick cording; also stiffened with groups of five rows of narrower cording around the crown and across the brim. The only piecing in the bonnet is the seam between the back and the brim; there is a group of five rows of cording around the seam on the brim side, and four rows on the back side, then a very small circle of four rows of cording at the center. Hand sewn.

Quaker bonnet made from celadon silk taffeta over wire frame, cardboard brim, with bavolet and crown lined with stiff cotton (?) honeycomb netting - appears machined netting. Machine sewn seams, with some hand finishing. Lining of pale cream China silk is partially missing, with split in cardboard and green outer silk as well in spots. Sides of bonnet has small dips on sides. Bow of same green silk is separated from bonnet.

Brown silk quilted bonnet with glazed cotton lining and supported by wicker ribs. Fabric ruffled around neck, front edge and ties.

Quaker bonnet made from black silk faille, prominent ribbing. Wire and cardboard frame, with bavolet stiffened with cotton netting, machined, and crown stiffened with coarse cotton canvas. Ties of black silk faille as well. Stained heavily inside China silk lining, with spot of wear on edges of crown of bonnet.

Lady's black straw braided bonnet, "lacey." Very small and shallow crown, with large brim that is longer than it is wide. Small crown is lined with black tarlatan, with back brim turned up with showcase small rosette of black machine bobbin lace. Perhaps a late mourning bonnet, but more likely stylish black. Came with hand-written note that states: "Belonged to Bets Knudson grandmother Bets gave it to Vi (donor's grandmother, Viola White)."

Girl’s bonnet made with a sturdy, smooth cardboard brim covered with purply speckled cotton; trimmed along edge with white silk braid; flat crown at rear with piped seam; self-fabric rosette at top rear;2.5” cape; unlined except front of brim, with self fabric. No ties.

Girl’s bonnet with a cardboard 'tunnel' brim with square corners, covered with aqua silk taffeta; crown directly behind of same silk gathered onto back of brim, and other edge gathered onto disk of covered cardboard, surmounted with matched ribbon rosette 6” ruffle or cape. Unlined. No ties.

Girl’s bonnet of creamy white silk, entirely hand stitched, drawn bonnet with black canes or whalebones; cape, white ribbons, ribbon drawstring inside to control fullness of crown. Partially lined with tarlatan. Slightly flaring brim, circular form.

Hand stitched fine brown braid in near spoon shape; row of small artificial sunflowers on back; tarlatan lining; 2 small cloth labels inside: 955 and NEAL. Evidence of removed decorations.

Bonnet formed of 5 wide bands of fine straw laid flat with decorative edge. 1 row forms circle for rear. Hand stitched, slightly flared, wired brim. Separate edging at bottom. No lining except for 5” strip of paper at crown. Loose threads around edge, supposedly never used.

Formed of very fine textured straw, alternating lacy bands with plain ones. More tubular form with flare of brim less gradual. No lining, hand stitched. Wired brim. Plain edging at base, more decorative guilloche type at front. Does not appear to have much wear.

Fine flat Leghorn straw braid, flat round back; high brim extended over forehead, narrow and straight at temple. Green/brown striped silk taffeta ribbon on crown, & ties, interfaced bavolet. Supplementary short ties of simple pale silk ribbon. Coarse black and white netting frill at inside top, with lavender silk ribbon rosettes.

Woven straw fabric, of striped appearance, with rows of straw gimp, edged with straw 'beading'. Tarlatan lining around front edge. Rounded 'ridgeline' with softly flattened back; slight upward and forward direction to top; slight flare to brim.

Medium brown plainwoven cotton. Rear crown drawn over canes 1/4” spacing; front made of woven bias strips, curled edges out. Self bavolet edged with braided bias. Back decorated with cotton strips; row of artificial flowers attached to blue flannel strip attached to brim. Blue velvet ribbon ties, 1.5” wide. No lining.

Lacy straw braid stitched into fabric forming bonnet with cylindrical crown and flaring deep brim at angle to crown. Buckram (?) lining in crown walls. Brim lined with pale peach plainwoven silk. No trims.

Faded lavendar silk satin outer fabric, self lining in brim. 3 decorative folds encircling crown. Trimmed with matching satin ribbon across head with different flat bows on either side. Same ribbon ties. Self bavolet, unstiffened, recent acetqte lining in crown.Wired brim, buckram (?) form.

Flat fine Leghorn straw braid 'French style cottage' bonnet, deep crown with angled, wide flaring brim. Brim wired concentrically within grayish gathered gauze lining. White silk lining in crown; gold stamped label: SHEPARD, NORWELL & CO. WINTER ST. & TEMPLE PLACE BOSTON. Later ribbon and plumes added.

Straight tunnel shape; bands of clear straw (horsehair) with interwoven accents, alternating with tan straw braid. Self-bavolet. No lining.

Maroon-brown fine checked silk taffeta. Slightly flaring brim. Groups of canes, 2 bands of self ruching. Self bow in back. Self frill on bavolet. Self lined brim with frill of pleated white cotton net. Ribbon ties, satin and dull warp stripes, ivory and pale pink; seem original.

Drawn bonnet, pale celadon silk with black lace edging on bows and bavolet. Self-faced to crown, no lining. No ties. Crown curves downward a little.

Grey silk drawn bonnet with bavolet, no decorations or lining. 12." x 2.5” silk ribbon ties, shaded gray warp stripes. Self faced to crown.

Delicate pink silk drawn bonnet, fits back of head; pointed brim. Original artificial roses and florets, leaves, etc., gauze, coarse lace. No ties. Flowers inside top front and outside on side; 'vine' across lower back.

Entirely hand stitched white cotton. Corded deep brim. Shallow crown. 4” bavolet, perhaps not original as sewing is less than magnificent. Brim edged with hand embroidered white scalloped work with fagotting. Replaced (?) (old) ivory silk ribbon ties.

Wadded bonnet or wired hood, entirely hand stitched iridescent silk taffeta, pink/grey. Soft crown, and brim with wire in front edge. Self-bavolet. No ties, no lining.

Cotton plain woven print with tiny yellow-orange sprigs on buff. Entirely hand stitched. Narrow hem on 6” bavolet. Brim lining brought around to finish front edge outside. Drawstring in rear casing. Crown gathered at top. Brim made of 2” sections filled with cardboard strips. Inner rear brim lined with plain-woven cotton.

Entirely hand-stitched bonnet made of dark yellow silk. Simply quilted with white lining and very thin filling. Deep crown; frill formed at front edge by drawstring through edge; drawstring through bottom edge ties in back. 1.5” wide yellow ribbon ties attached well inside.

Fine leghorn with deep brim angled slightly to deep crown; sides dip down; straw ‘bavolet.’ No lining. Wire around front edge. Original ribbon still attached in two twisted rows across bonnet with little bows at each ear. Ribbon bavolet. Only one tie remains. Ribbon is about 1.25” wide; white and [now] celadon green ombre with narrow borders of green and red florets.
