Side seams originally fagoted, but apparently the seams split, and were resewn almost completely covering it up except for a few inches on each one.

Sleeves and neck is edged with a wide white cotton machine-laced lace.

Waistband and cuffs formed of insertion embroidered with cloverlike blossom. Same motif embroidered above deep hem and along ‘robings’. Yoke edges are piped. Back opening probably was ripped; re-sewn to from hem to waistband.

Toddler’s dress, entirely hand stitched. Tiny red milled ramage design. Fairly wide piped neckline, shallow yoke, piped. Slightly flared short sleeves edged with piping and finely hemmed self-frill; piped armscyes. Bodice gathered onto yoke and set-in waistband with a piped bottom edge. Medium long skirt gauffered onto waistband; no tucks evident. Back opening, 7 hooks and eyes. Skirt hem faced with recycled fabric, apple print that seems to date about 1800. Bodice lined with heavy white cotton.

Entirely hand-stitched girl’s dress made of blue-flowered delaine. Good-quality pattern print that makes up of dark brown ground with small blue closely-spaced half-drop flowers. Inset waistband with gathered skirt. Pocket on right side. Bodice gathered at center front waist. High round piped neck. Lined with brown cotton. Long, straight sleeves with plackets, jockeys. Hem turned up one extra notch.

Girl’s dress, tiny brown milled print entirely hand-stitched cotton printed with densely spaced, tiny spiderlike milled design, now golden tan but probably once dark brown, given the remaining sample near CF. High wide bound neckline, long sleeves with fullness pleated at top, slit at bottom with bound edges for a tiny wrist. Somewhat high waistline piped; smooth bodice with piping up center; hook and eye closure in back. Longish skirt attached with small pleats all around, one narrow tuck, one removed. Deep hem faced with sturdy white cotton.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s Gabrielle dress made of fine scarlet wool. Lined with white PW cotton. Hem is faced with blue woven striped cotton. White glass buttons down the center back; plated with a loop shank. Narrow red-figured white ribbon trim around skirt. Modest ‘coat’ sleeves.

Partly machine-stitched princess dress made of textured cream-colored wool. Brown vegetable ivory buttons down the front; six military-like horizontal tabs in back over the center back; side patch pockets. Wide, round collar. Three-quarter length sleeves. All edges are bound with brown silk ribbon.

Entirely hand stitched child’s dress with white zigzag trim. White striped dimity with a high waistline formed by double drawstrings. Drawstrings also in front and back neckline. All are rather wide tapes. Short, wide puffed sleeves attached to bodice which has a narrow insertion of zigzag tape up the center and the down each side of the skirt front. The hem is bordered with 3 bands formed of 5 pintucks above the zig zags with the bottom zig zags being instead formed into little vandykes.

Child’s dress entirely hand stitched block printed thin cotton (found the relevant registration marks and glitches) on lavender, black and yellow meander design. Wide scoop neck finished with band of Ayreshire as well as the short, wide puffed sleeves. Piped armscyes. Smooth across front and fullness in back. High waist with back opening closed with two pairs of large, tarnished brass hooks.

The bodice is gathered at the center front and center back waist. High piped neckline; piped armscyes and slightly flaring long sleeves finished with narrow self frills. Two tucks around the skirt. Back opening with hooks and loops at top and waist; buttonholes in between; functional and decorative red-orange “inkwell” China buttons.

Entirely hand-stitched girl's dress made of orange and brown print on mohair. Dress seems to be mohair because the hand is very springy, woven with a tiny herringbone effect. Printed with bold orange-red and olive-green diamond motifs. The yoke is lined, round neckline bound with silk ribbon. Short sleeves lined and bound with silk ribbon, and manipulated in such a way as to form the double tucked effect concealing the bound hem. All this is a very considerate way to make such a fabric tolerable to the wearer. The bodice and skirt are cut in one with the fullness controlled above (front and back) by wide and narrow paired tucks releasing fullness at the waist. Tuck near the bottom of the skirt. Unlined. Hook and eyes in back, with nonfunctional MOP buttons.

Hooks and eyes on the yoke. Seems to have had casings around the upper and lower edges of the waistband.

Entirely hand-stitched girl’s dress made of red wool. Bodice and sleeves are lined with heavy cotton. Piped neck and armscyes. Some gathers at the center front and the center back waist. ‘Coat’ sleeves with pointed turnback cuffs. High neck. Set in waistband. Skirt has 1” pleats all around, stitched together loosely inside back to maintain arrangement. Waistband and cuffs outlined with flat black braid, same used for 3 rows around top of skirt. Slightly wider braid used for two bands of 3 rows each. Skirt hem is faced with polished cotton; two pieces pieced together. The center back opening with buttonholes and black swirl-back ball buttons. This has been skillfully re-modelled. The skirt top was deeply folded over and a placket remains in place but unused. A new placket was made to proper left in back. The opening was widened, the sleeves set higher on shoulders. Jockeys were removed to form cuffs.

Entirely hand-stitched boy’s dress made of fine cream cotton printed with small once-purple polka dots centered with 4 tiny red circles with white centers. The bodice gathered into a wide-bound neckline and inset waistband. Short, full skirt gathered into the bottom of the waistband. Hooks at neck and waist. Short, widely flaring raglan sleeves. The fullness of the sleeves are controlled near the neck by 2 rows of shirring. Unlined Note attached by small brass safety pin reads: “Dress worn by my father Frank M. Spofford - About 1856.”

Boy’s frock top made of white cotton with small red polka dots. Trimmed with bands of paisley print to match. Godets to add to the flare of the skirt. Back opening with eyelets for buttons. Similar eyelets in front set within a narrow box pleat. Belt loop on each side for long rope tie with tassels.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s pique dress made of white cotton. Straight waistline with inset belt. Low neck and wide but short cap-like sleeves. Fairly full skirt attached with wide pleats, scalloped hem. Back opening with MOP buttons.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s ‘tent’ dress with a diagonal opening. Made of white cotton. Pique, short horizontal bars. A-line or tent shaped with front opening from proper right shoulder to left hem. ‘Coat’ sleeves. High round neckline trimmed with narrow lace edging. Simple embroidered muslin frill at hem. White cotton wrapped dome buttons. Simple net forming outer layer. Textured white braid forms triple border at all edges.

Child’s dress, brown pin stripe. Toddler-sized dress, entirely hand stitched thin cotton with light brown pinstripes (gingham). High waist, classic skirt with straight panels front and back, side gores. Tucks above hem. Drawstrings in front and back neckline, also back waist and sleeve edges. Narrow shoulder straps puffed sleeves set well back over shoulder blade.

Entirely hand-stitched girl’s dress made of white calico cotton using recycled fabric and embroidered border. High waist; inset waistband; pointed yoke and bodice slightly gathered to suggest a V shape. Piped seams; slightly large sleeves narrowing to the wrist. The top has fullness pleated down above a piped band, which may well have been a later addition. The skirt is attached with large pleats. Elaborate embroidered design in white cotton on the hem. The center back opening has hooks and eyes for the closure.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s dress made of cotton. A-lined. Design consists of red, black, pink, lavender, yellow, green diamond spots. Wide shallow neck. Short, wide sleeves. Neck and cuffs are edged with bands of a floral print cotton stripe. Tiny MOP buttons in the back at the neckline placket.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s dress with jacket made of scarlet wool. Trimmed with black velvet ribbon forming series of large square grids around skirt. Smaller versions border the bolero and dress sleeves. Dress (a) - princess style dress with a flaring skirt and short wide sleeves. 13 buttonholes down back for closure. Bolero Jacket (b) - coat sleeves, underlined with white cambric.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s dress made of fine cambric. Fairly simple with Ayrshire embroidery in usual places. Ankle-length. Short, wide sleeves with self frills; topped with an extra doubled jockey-like cap. V panel in front with plain robings which also appear on either side of simply embroidered center panel in full skirt. Embroidered waistband, scallops from hem. Drawstring in the neckline. No other fasteners.

Machine-stitched child’s dress made of white percale. V-inset in bodice has Ayrshire work with a little medallion centered with needle lace. Short, straight sleeves with tiers of embroidered edging. Cased waistband of insertion, presently a narrow ivory silk ribbon runs through it. Drawstring in neckline. Six narrow tucks above deep hem which is finished with 2” embroidered edging of broderie anglaise with a design of circles with simple needle-lace filling.

Partly hand-stitched dress made of heavy novelty weave cotton with diagonal brocade stripe. Coat sleeves that end with two bands of heavy white cotton braids. Skirt formed of box pleats placed two in front, two in back and one on each side. The top edges of the pleats are finished with a band of cotton. Back opens all the way down the center back with button closures. Unlined.

Machine stitched dress made of red plaid mohair or wool on silk warp. Close-fitting front with full length opening from proper right shoulder to left hem. “Epaulet” strip on proper left shoulder. Narrow coat sleeves with pointed turnback cuffs and split jockeys. Back of skirt is box pleated onto a section of waistband floating free of bodice underneath the three “tails” of the back. The sides of the front skirt each have a slit pocket on an angle. The sparkling gilt brassbuttons are used on the opening, epaulet, jockeys and cuffs. Loops of green and yellow braid form concentric ovals on the tails, and decorate the hem, pockets and opening.

Hand and machine-stitched girl’s 2-piece dress made of silk taffeta. Blue with gray pinstripes. Long waisted polonaise (a) - deep false lapels of deep red velvet outlining a shirred panel which has concealed hooks and loops on proper left for closure. Tight shaped sleeves finished with deep red velvet turn-back cuffs. Ditto velvet standing collar. Pannier effect formed by pleating lower sides of polonaise on front edges; one has curved corner, the other square. Unlined. Small bright red velvet-trimmed tails in back over skirt bustle. Bustled skirt (b) - has bright red velvet band above hem finished with narrow kilted flounce.

Entirely hand-stitched child's dress made of cylinder printed cotton. The pattern consists of a rainbow stripe of red and brown crossed with widely spaced, narrow red stripes. Bulging, short puffed sleeves; the fullness at the top is controlled by rows of shirring all around. Wide, bound neckline. Set-in waistband. Long skirt. Unlined. Hem faced with light blue milled cylinder print. Back opening with hook closure on neck and waist.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s dress made of finely checked white cap dimity. Straight neckline with paired drawstrings. Short tubular sleeves with triangular flaps give a cuff effect. Trimmed with narrow Ayrshire edging; also used on hem. Double drawstring at the waist.

Entirely hand-stitched boy's dress made of fine, thin cotton madras or gingham. Plaid has shades of brown, tan, white, and sky blue. All cut on bias. Smooth, straight, wide bodice with dropped waist, and very short skirt with a deep hem. Short, slightly flared sleeves. Wide scoop neckline. Fastens in the back with 4 MOP buttons. Bodice and sleeves lined with heavy white cotton. Basting remains in place at the waist.

Entirely hand-stitched child's dress made of predominantly blue and white plaid silk taffeta. Straight bodice with 3 narrow box pleats in both the front and the back. Round collar and pagoda sleeves with split in bottom. Spanned by black velvet ribbon bands. Skirt attached in pleats to waist and piped in black as are the armscyes. Basque with large points all around. Front opening with concealed hooks. Basque and collar is trimmed with graduated bands of black velvet ribbon. Lined with white cambric.

Entirely hand-stitched girl's dress made of wool challis. The design consists of a green background with a floral design--neatly spaced lavender and red flowers alternated with fine grid segments. Thick red waistband with a paisley-esque design; also seen on the short flaring sleeves ends. Pleated bodice. Full pleated skirt. The back has a buttoned opening.

Girl’s dress made of wool or cotton plain weave gauze with solid horizontal bands. The pattern consists of a tan background with block printed of branches that crudely suggest chine patterns in black, aqua, mustard, and coral. Short straight yoke with shallow scoop neckline in both front and back. Short flaring sleeves with deep tuck partway down. Bodice gathered into the yoke and the full skirt gathers into a narrow waistband. The center back opens with no fasteners. Narrow flat lace edging on neck and sleeve ends.

Tiny child’s entirely hand stitched thin cotton dress, blue and tan striped. High waist with bodice cut on bias. Puffed sleeves with cuff bands; skirt fullness gathered on tape drawstring. Drawstring in neckline.

Entirely hand-stitched child's dress made of printed cotton. The print is of a tiny red leafy vine. High waist with 2 bands of handmade rickrack insertion forming a V center-front. Wide scoop neckline. Puffed sleeves. Fairly narrow skirt with sides of the front panel cut at an angle. Waistband made of machine-brocaded white cotton insertion trim. The same machine-brocaded trim is used at the cuffs and neckline. Hem finished with rickrack trim.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s dress or coat made of white pique cotton. Simple ribbed fabric made into tent shaped dress with the center front opening to the hem. Closure along the center front with pearl buttons. Simple ‘coat’ sleeves.

Entirely hand-stitched infant boy's dress made of fine white. High-waisted bodice gathered into the scooped neck with bound edge and drawstring. Inset waistband made of embroidered insertion (same as on 2004.131) forming casing for fine tape ties run along the top and bottom edge. Short double-puffed sleeves with cuff bands trimmed, like the neck, with Ayrshire edging. Long skirt gathered into waistband evenly all around. Unusually detailed embroidered insertion set with piping above the deep hem. The skirt front has vertical (not angled) robings on either side of a central embroidered strip with an eyelet center ‘vein’. The satin stitched designs are not Ayrshire, and look a lot like the work on the chemisette with the drawn thread sections, varied here, and the spiky flowers.

Entirely hand-stitched boy’s dress made of fine white cotton. High-waisted; bodice has a V design of lace insertion alternating with embroidered insertion (same as G2004.130). The Inset waistband is made of embroidered insertion forming a casing for a ribbon, but there are fine tape ties stitched to the opening. Scoop neck with bound edge and drawstring. Short sleeves with two long pointed flaps to be turned back and secured with basting or pins. Skirt gathered into waistband evenly all around. Lace insertion above the deep hem. Long skirt.
