Suspenders

Object/Artifact

Pair of separate braces: Berlin work, on fine, possibly silk, mesh canvas; all hand stitched. Shades of red, blue, yellow, orange and green fine wool worked in a floral stripe. Lined or backed with fine ivory moire ribbon whose sides are brought to the front as a binding. The front end was bound first. The back ends were each turned under atop the end of a wide elastic band ending in a white kid buttonholed tab covered with ivory silk. The front end is crudely sewn to a fancy-weave silk extension backed with ribbon and inserted into a wide brass buckle. Sewn to the buckle is a silk-covered leather base from which a pair of narrow elastic tabs hang at an angle, each terminating in small buttonholed silk-covered leather tab. Each has a narrow keeper made of narrow silk ribbon to keep the brace extension in place. 2 1/4” wide x 18 3/4” long minus the tabs. Compare to 2002.191 to see that these were lengthened; evidence of the original position shows that the extension was higher so that it was originally concealed by the decorative strip, like the other example.

Wide brown painted cloth sweat band, tan cardboard lining, the top being an ivory silk self-patterned moire (stripe with floral sprigs) paper (?), and the label printed in black, along with a strip of printed paper bearing the name of Micajah Speakman. The brim has a slight curve at the sides but is overall flat. The crown is a regular cylinder. Narrow black silk grosgrain ribbon hatband with a tiny bow. Hatbox (a) in the shape of the hat, covered with wallpaper of a quasi-baroque architectural pattern in gray and ochre (gold?) on a tan ground (now); blue on outer rim of lid. Lid (b) and box rim lined with pages from a large English Bible, Genesis. The rest lined with plain now-tan paper. No label. Top bears inked inscription: “M Speakman West Nantmeal Chester Co, Pa.” Stubs of brown cotton tape ties on either side of box. Looks like the lid rim was doomed, in being too small to fit over the box rim."
