Small beaded purse with a rounded bottom. The beaded design consists of a row of cornflowers at the bottom, and forget-me-nots with a strange flower on the top. The frame design is composed of ferny arabesques and simple flowers, made of very shiny pinchbeck with chased highlights on the edges. It has two spring latches with buttons on either side of a center frame made of brass of a more coppery hue, with holes to receive the lining for two compartments. A small ring pulls on both sides.

Girl’s beaded chatelaine and belt. Inch-wide belt and straps worked with large beads in black/white Greek meander on turquoise ground. Pouch is a flat square showing a spaniel puppy upon a golden cushion, on a turquoise ground; narrow black/white border. Backed with black lining cotton. Edges finished with dark blue woolen cord; large pearl button and thread loop fastener. Waistband is 22.5” long when fastened.

Entirely hand-stitched quilt. Backed with gold-colored surah. The center has a lavishly embroidered spray of flowers. The date 1887 and “Mother” is stitched on a tan satin diamond, superimposed upon a maroon velvet cross. The same velvet forms a wide border with dark blue satin squares in the corners. The main area is made of loosely-formed squares composed of scraps of expensive, fashionable fabrics including plush, matelassé, Brocade, voided velvet, cisele velvet, pekin, damasse, and a few printed silks, along with the more usual taffetas, grosgrains, velvets and satins. The edges are all stitched with elaborate borders, and many pieces have exquisite floral sprays executed in fine silk thread. Others are done with thicker thread. Some are large and complex; a few are simple, perhaps done by a lesser hand. There is a magnificent cup and saucer, vase, moon, heart, and high buttoned boot depicted as well. The most amazing one may be the scenic vignette imitating greeting card layouts. An outstanding tour de force of embroidery and fabric selection.

Only wadded (with wool) in the bavolet; quilted with blue silk thread in a few rows around the front edge of brim. Crown-to-brim seam is piped, and crown is gathered at top of head. Self fabric ties. Hand sewn.

Girl's hood of brown silk twill, wadded with cotton, and lined with napped cotton flannel in mottled green and white. Made to hug the head, with no bavolet or standing brim. The silk is ruched in tucks that run from the top of the face to the back of the neck on either side of center, and in tucks that run around the face and down the sides of the hood; the lines of quilting follow these tucks. Separate piece of silk twill at the top of the head, made to resemble a bow. The lining is made in three parts: a center piece and two sides. A white cotton band runs around the inside of the front edge, apparently once holding a net frill. Ties of off-white ribbed silk ribbon. Hand sewn.

Girl's quilted bonnet hood of yellow silk twill, lined with tan and brown cotton, faced with pink and white silk ribbon, and wadded with cotton or wool in thin layer. Full crown, gathered to brim at piped seam. Brim is quilted with brown silk thread in lines that run parallel to front edge; crown is quilted in similarly-spaced curved, concentric rows that radiate out from center back. Bavolet is gathered to brim at piped seam, and is quilted in three rows that follow bottom and side edges of curtain. Ribbon ties, cut short, are ombré silk ribbons in dark and light pink. Hand sewn.

Quilted bonnet hood of brown silk taffeta, faced with black silk taffeta, lined with dark green glazed/polished cotton and black cotton. Brim is quilted in diagonal lines that run from front back to crown seam; crown is quilted in vertical lines. Front edge, which is piped in black silk, is turned back, with a stiff wire inserted in the fold to keep the hood's shape at the face. A bias-cut band of brown silk, wadded and quilted into four thick channels, is placed around the crown on the brim. Bavolet is gathered to brim, with a black silk ribbon bow placed on seam at center back. Black silk ribbon ties. Hand sewn.

Bavolet has one row of quilting around the edge. Ribbon (figured with leaves down center green and black stripe, surrounded by ombré brown stripes, and with green and black narrow stripes at selvages) used for ties and for a bow at center back of bavolet seam. Hand sewn.

The brim extends into lappets on either side, with an applied bavolet (wadded with cotton) at back of the cross-barred silk and the ribbon; ribbon is also pleated to back over bavolet seam. Lightly quilted in wide-spaced rows parallel to front edge, which is piped. Dark blue silk ribbon ties. Hand sewn.

Quilted bonnet hood of black silk taffeta, self-faced, with brown glazed/polished cotton lining and thin wadding. Center panel of hood is pleated at neck and flares widely over back; side panels flow more sedately. Front edge is trimmed with box-pleated black silk satin ribbon, and a black silk grosgrain ribbon bow is placed over pleats at back of neck. Side panels are machine-quilted in concentric triangles centered at shoulder, while center panel is quilted with more artistic loops down to four plain horizontal lines at bottom. Lower edge is cut in scallops and bound in taffeta. Narrow black silk ribbon ties attached to facing. Machine sewn.

Reticule, white, vandyke top Entirely hand stitched cotton reticule, rectangle with rounded bottom corners. Top edges are vandyked with blanket stitched edges; sides and bottom have folded frill effect that is really a side-bottom panel, embellished with drawn thread border edged with French knots. First side has embroidered design executed in white cotton thread in blanket, back, satin, stem, and boullion stitches, French knots: “Lydia Dole” beneath simple nosegay surrounded by stiff leafy border with small florets and a flower in each ‘corner.’ No eyelets, but the four flowers have simple needle lace fillings. The other side has more elegantly disposed flowers, leafy vines, and long leaves filling the space, incorporating eyelets and no needle lace. Little touch of a tendril in fine linen (?) thread. Single drawstring of plied cotton cord with tassle in homespun/woven linen tape casing. No evidence indicating there was a second drawstring.

Beaded reticule, U-shaped. 6” long.; both sides identical. Lined with deep red silk faille that extends two inches above the bag; faded pink [rayon??] ribbon drawstrings form bows at the ends. No fringe at bottom. The lining seems likely to date to 1875-1900. Beads appear to be sewn to cloth ground. The upper border is dark red, saw tooth, with colorful leafy vine. The main panel has an opalescent ground with one each of a yellow, red and blue flower, narrow leaves. Black glass bead ground with opaque white, pale pink, l blue, turquoise, and trans blue that looks grey. Black silk satin top with black silk ribbon ties. White leather lining. 5.5” x ?”" The black ground is suspect- could be a later example. They were much emulated in the early 20th c.

Reticule made of black silk velvet. Cut-corner squared bottom with a flap top. The flap is lined with selvage edges of ivory silk. Narrow black silk drawstrings on either side for closing. The reticule's body is lined with purplish brown glazed cotton, and fitted with a small interior pocket secured with a pointed button flap, and an incised MOP button. The Front has a large spray of roses and buds springing from a base. The reverse has a large spray anchored in a shallow basket surrounded by flowers and leaves. Twisted fringe of opalescent beads along the base.

Entirely hand-stitched 2-piece reticule made of ivory silk moiré. Flaring shape with reverse-curved bottom edges accented with 3 tiny looped wire tassels. Piped seams. Deep top flaps have corresponding flare and shape. Casing with ivory silk taffeta ribbon drawstrings. Lined with coarse cheesecloth. Embroidered identically on front and back in ivory silk satin stitch, a design of a dense bouquet with sprays in the top corners. Contains a scrap of embroidered gauze as seen in the center front and the center back of the bodice.

Reticule of bright berlin wools worked on canvas in a box form. The design is a series of stripes arranged in ombre, but not rainbow, fashion: blues, reds, purples, greens and so on. Each corner has a different pattern worked in contrasting colors with cut steel bead accents. The top has a border of the ombre colors on the diagonal with cut steel beads separating the hues. The heavy silk cord is composed of brown, yellow, and 2 shades of blue twisted together. The heavy metallic gold tassel looks to have been appropriated from a military uniform- perhaps a sword or sash. Lined with sky blue silk. "Attached inked note reads: Mrs. William J. Dyer about 1833.

Small reticule made of delicate grapefruit-pink silk mesh. The topstitch over a pair of small pinchbeck or gilt brass rods with bulbs on the ends. This slips through an embossed pinchbeck ring. The middle is decorated simply with gold-tone faceted metal beads forming a linear double dagged band. Silk tassel at the bottom with a pinchbeck ferrule.

Black velvet or cotton velveteen drawstring purse or reticule, shaped almost like a lima bean. Lined with brown cotton. Wide casing with a flap above, faced in green silk. Small green silk bow at either side. Beaded pattern on each side; one has a vaguely tree-of-life mound with fantastic flowers springing from it. The other looks like a stylized bud. Each surrounded by a row of pinwheels.
