Girl's cap. Entirely handstitched, coarse plain weave cotton; 1 self tie, the other a cotton twill tape tie; flat 2-piece construction; tiny hems, overcast seam. No frills. Probably a night cap.

Sheer embroidered cap. Entirely hand stitched sheer fine cotton; exquisite satin stitch stylized pinks-and-ferns on brim, with buttonholed-vandyke edging; deep brim with piping, low on cheek; lower rear edge gathered with narrow linen flat braid; self ties. Narrow plain weave cotton tape (?) casing for drawstring.

Cap, backstitched embroidered. Fine white cotton day cap; entirely hand stitched; hand embroidered with meander design, including ends of long, wide ties. Horseshoe crown slightly gathered into medium brim. Wide long ties.

Quaker cap of fine sheer cotton muslin. Entirely hand-stitched in three sections - brim, hood, and cap. Small frill on underside of side panels and continuing into back to form a very shallow bavolet. Silk taffeta ribbons handing from bottom tabs.

Woman's morning cap of white cotton percale, trimmed with a sheer lawn ruffle. The crown is gathered on a drawstring that ties at top of head, and another at the back of the neck. Two sets of ties attached to corners of brim: one set ends in angled blunt line, other set is longer and rounded (likely decorative, not to actually be tied). Hand sewn.

Quaker cap made from fine sheer cotton muslin. Machine-stitched cap made from a crown area gathered to a wide brim. Drawstring in nape of neck, but no bavolet. Side edges terminate in small points, attached to which are two ties from self fabric.

Matching infant cap and jacket, hand-knit made of fine white cotton with beaded decoration. Very small. Checker design of solid and lace knit with blue forget-me-nots on the solid areas. Jacket (a) - long sleeves with some fullness in top. Front opening closed with 2 pairs of fancy white cotton tape or ribbon and a plain-woven cotton tape drawstring through neckline beading. Lace on cuffs. Cap (b) - round crown. Lace is different from the jacket around edges, matching ribbon ties. The cuff, chest, face, neck and crown have yellow and blue flowered borders. The crown is filled with a bold yellow and blue star. Tiny, opaque beads that are light yellow, yellow, coral, dark blue; transparent dark green, red translucent medium blue, and mint.

Dinner cap, black net encasing 'blonde' net. “Babushka” shape with snood effect. Black ruching around edges. Black banded satin ribbon ties and bow on pointed center front. Front is formed on milliner’s wire encased in silk.

Dinner cap. Black crepe underlining, satin striped georgette gathered over crown, wire circular frame. 1” frill of black machine lace all around edge. Wide black satin bow at rear with narrow black ribbon and narrow peach (?) ribbon curls; also layers of black net frills.

Dinner cap made of black net under black lace, on wire frame, spotted net ties with lace edges; trimmed with orange and black velvet ribbon bows, large flat faux pearls and smaller ones; little ferny fronds glass dewdrops, tiny rosebuds and large white rose.

Hand stitched cotton net over wire frame. Front edge of brim flips back over crown. Sheer delicate white silk ribbon used for decorative ties as well as for bows over ears and in center back. Short, functional plainewoven silk ribbon ties.

Dinner cap of black spotted net on a wire armature. Black lace edging all around with an additional row over top of head. Two rows of black satin ribbon laid in flat twists around crown forming loops over left ear and bow over the right extending into bowed end near left back. Short black ribbon tie remains on left side.

Hand stitched dinner cap made of starched white net on a flat wire armature. Standard horseshoe crown and brim edged with embroidered net that continues down the side and back, gathered over the ears. At the ears is also a pleated frill of net under the lace frill. Soft white ribbon with corded edges forms ties, and a small bow over each ear.

Lady’s dinner cap made of layers of black spotted net on a wire frame, with dagged edged lace all around. The edge is trimmed with elaborately pleated cheap purple silk ribbon with picot edges, with streamers emanating from a bow at the center front, secured in place with pairs of black seed beads. Small bows on either side near the bottom. Possibly used in second mourning although the violet seems a bit too jolly for that.

Lady's dinner cap made of spotted black cotton net mounted on a wide sturdy band for a base, with a seperate floating panel, edged with black lace and shaped with points at the side top and bottom and decorated with 3 rows of narrow violet ribbon borders. The base is covered with a wider, shirred darker blue-violet ribbon also used to form a looped bow with streamers at the center front where the crown rises to form a peak accented with more shirred ribbon. The purple suggests half-mourning wear.

"Black net lappet cap decorated with narrow black tulle ruffles edged with two entwined purple ribbons. Joined or darted at center. Peaked front edge, concentration of ruffling around ears; 2” purple ribbon ties or streamers.It seems likely to have been worn in half-mourning, given the purple and black combination."

Black lace dinner cap. Black lace mounted on black net, shaped by two rows of wire; black rep silk ribbon trim and ties. Catches around chignon at back but overlayer drapes like a hankie.

Night cap made of thin machine knit silk, stocking-cap style. Seamed; deep hem, deep blue border. The rest is gathered at top and finished with a thick tassel of fine red and blue silk thread. Varied-width bands of red, orange, blue and green, black and white.

Entirely hand-stitched small girl’s cape with a hood made of white dimity. The deep tuck narrows down above the narrow hem. Fabric pleated into a neckband, with a shoulder cape edged with lawn frill. Large hood with similar lawn frill, cord drawstrings run through a casing tie at the center front. 2 side back seams have been opened at the top as if to permit drawing the arms through, which would seem to be awkward, and not period. No ties or other closure.

Lady or possibly young lady's cape made of black silk faille. Black beading and soutache across breasts and back sides of the cape. Tall neckline with ruffled trim. Lined with green and black shot cotton.

Entirely hand-stitched cape or cloak for infant made of dimity, with fine cambric ruffles. Minute French inspired seams. Hems on ruffles, which trim entire perimeter of cape, as well as capelet, standing collar and neck seam. Ruffles whipped on. Outer hems 5”. Pleats around neck to fit 5 or 6 year old.

Cape made from an 1860s machine-woven paisley type shawl; usual coloring; black with reds and oranges. Well-matched use of pattern suggestive of current Art Nouveau taste. Shaped to the shoulders, rich but neat folds. Rounded collar with 3 notches in the hem, made to stand up way from the shoulders if desired. Closed in front with 3 shaped straps and 3 pairs of mother-of-pearl shank buttons with cut steel centers. Wadded and lined with what is now a pale melon-pink cotton sateen.

Black repp cape, trimmed with black beading and black lace along front opening and sleeves; black scroll beading all along arm seams on front and back; stand up collar is trimmed with stringed black jet beads and black lace; hook and eye closure along front.

Doll's cape of off-white cotton flannel woven with thick vertical blue stripes and narrower broken vertical and horizontal blue stripes; trimmed with dark blue and navy silk ribbons. Made in the form of three-quarters of a circle with neck cutout. Neck edge has tightly knife-pleated navy ribbon as a ruffle, with a bow at center front. Dark blue ribbon is sewn around edges of cape and in stripes radiating out from neck, each of which ends in a bow. Metal eye remains at neck but hook is missing. Hems are sewn by machine, but ribbons are applied by hand.

Lady's black wool cape. Cape extends to hip length or just above. No arm holes. Seam up CB, with darts at shoulder area to create a smooth line. Collar which can be turned down or stood up. Round without points. Collar upper and under collar, both breasts and across hem to CB are covered in black cotton soutache braiding. Machined topstitching in three rows trim edges of CF opening, collar, and continue across hem. CF closure of hooks and eyes (3) hidden by wool panel with pinked edge and disguised externally with two tibis of black wool. Black cotton sateen lining with interfacing inside or warmth. Entirely hand-stitched.

Wide cape, reaching to below hips, of pink-beige wool. Wide storm collar; fastening at neckline with heavy hooks two pairs of good white mother of pearl buttons at top without braid or flap joining (original?) with buttoned flaps (closure details missing?). Trimmed down the front opening, middle back, hem, and collar with brown silk stitching, and couched braid, and appliqued flowerettes of self material.

Lady's cape made of velvet. Lined with black silk. Grosgrain black ribbon tie at the neck for closing.

Entirely hand-stitched infant cape or cloak made of cotton dimity. Fine cotton frill minute stitch. Frill attached to all edges, including capelet across back shoulders. 28” long in back from neckline to bottom of frill. Ribbon supplied.

Machine-stitched and machine-quilted infant’s cape or mantle made of fine ivory ‘cashmere’ or opera flannel with a short and a long layer bordered made of sky blue silk. The neck hole and small hood is trimmed with an ivory silk cord and a decorative tassel. The rest of the garment is lined with cotton satin.

Lady's brown wool cape. The cape is below or waist length, and lined with brown silk taffeta, which is quilted to the interfacing or batting inside. Over the shoulder lays a second layer of cape, which gentle point at CB but has sharp, acute points at CF. The collar has batwing points across its length. Front wool panels of cape are pieced across both panels. Cotton velveteen machined tape in three lines across hem and up CF, double row on second layered pointed capelet, and one row trimming edge of collar. CF closure of hook and eye at neckline as well as button tibi closure near bust line. Entirely hand-stitched.

Capelet has high piped neckline; piped shoulder seams. Bottom edged with matching 1” fringed silk braid. Lined with tan PW cotton.

Capelet made of wool delaine, printed such that it looks like a complex design of patterned stripes overlaid at an angle with dark ones.

Black wool capelet lined with black cotton; long lappets in front; back of capelet is split; stand up collar with ruching around base of ruffle that surrounds the neck; capelet is trimmed with black beading .

Short, rounded shoulder capelet made of unlined changeable green silk taffeta. Small pointed collar. Deep knotted turquoise silk fringe around the hem. At the hem, three rows of matching green silk braid outlining all the edges. This is speculated to be a girl’s capelet.

Child's capelet of pale fawn-colored cotton. Lined with plain weave cotton in natural colorway. Entirely hand-stitched. The capelet comes to about elbow length on a small child, and has a folded over collar with gentle points. Collar, CF, and hem of capelet are trimmed with soutache braiding in pale white. No interfacing felt in between two layers of cotton. CF hook and eye closure just at neck.

Adult woman's capelet from from black wool outer and black glazed cotton in lining., Hook and eye closure at high round neckline. No collar. Wool is cut from one large half-round piece, while lining has piecing in corners. Some small holes and stains on wool.

Pelerine or capelet, ivory silk net, circular with high neckline. Fine hem, 1/2” hem at back edge with thread buttons. Border at neck and hem embroidered with (probably) silk meander-vine. Field filled with simple flowers and “o’s.” Shoulder seam embellished with leaflets. Approximately 11.5” deep.

Circular capelet of ivory silk satin lined with off white plain weave cotton. Edges bound with matching silk picot ribbon. Small standing collar made from ribbon and hook and loop closure. Embroidered border of tamboured green and pink silk full-blown rose and bud motifs separated by points of scalloped chain-like border.

Small cape made of soft white cotton net with tiny appliqued flowers scattered over it, intermingled with leaflet sprays and dots (Carrimackross). Scalloped edges. Graduated attached border panel and small collar, all with appliqued scalloped edge.

Fine, sheer cotton mull or lawn capelet with elaborate, superb white cotton embroidery. Triangular form, shoulder seams, narrow foldover collar on a narrow stand. Roses, forget-me-nots and ivy with a wide variety of needlelace fillings. Similar detailing on narrow embroidered edging

Capelet with collar, entirely hand stitched fine muslin. Short, shaped to shoulders. Ayreshire embroidered motifs appliqued to muslin, with various drawn thread fillings and eyelet work. Narrow bobbin lace edging all around edges and on seam lines. Border of hearts, forget me nots, pinks, etc. with scattering of small leaflets and flowers in the field.

Black lady's capelet. Mid-arm length. Black silk satin outer fabirc, and inner silk lining. Stand collar, with two outerlayer collars for "flared" effect. One collar is a macined-netting with machine emrboidery in white-cream. The second outer collar is a black silk mull fabric, which has been fluted. The body of the capelet is covered in a zig-zag cream (originally gold?) cotton tarlatan fabric. This in turn is filled in with periodic fluer-de-lis and spades, accmplished with a machined chain stitch. Black satin silk bows at CF with ribbon hanging down. Hook and eye closure at CF which goes halfway down. "Conrad's Boston" sewn inside capelet. This capelet is from a department store Conrad's in Boston.

Capelet, all cotton 'cap' dimity, entirely hand stitched; wide faux collar formed by row of piping; muslin ruffle whipped to edges of ‘collar and capelet. Pointed front.

Entirely hand stitched cotton plaid madras with float design; orange, med. blue, lt blue, soft red, pink, violet, brown, beige, on white; piped neckline and shoulder seams, small gathers CB, no fastener; 1/4

Crescent-shaped piece, entirely hand stitched with bias edging at top; piping with frill at outer edges. Roller printed arabesques on beige ground in red, overprinted green, yellow, brown. 15” back neck to bottom.

Entirely hand stitched white cotton. Pointed front and back, rather large. Narrow overcast seams with running stitch. Border of 8 rows of pin tucks between each of 3 rows of chain stitched flower sprays with holes for centers. Pin tucked and matching embroidered eyelet frill all around.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s or infant’s cape made of fine red fine wool twill. Semicircular. No shaping. Lined with PW glazed cotton. Bound high neckline. 1.5" bias band of thin black fabric appliqued on the perimeter 1.5” from the edge. Hook and thread loop at neck for securing.

Girl’s capelet of wool fabric 2-end navy/orange pin stripes with brocade 'overlay' suggestive of bark texture; hand stitched. Shoulder seams. Narrow standing collar, high neckline. Rounded pointy shape. Dk navy velvet 1” ribbon applied around edge and again 1/2” within that. Lined with still-crisp brown glazed PW cotton.

Girl’s capelet, hand stitched of magenta colored waffle weave wool fabric edged with machine made lace of shetland and white wool. Similar trim appplied to back. Triangular piece fits over shoulders and down back, ending in fishtail-like appendage.

"Child’s capelet with separate sleeves, entirely hand stitched. Made of scratchy wool or mohair/silk or cotton in black and white plaid, where in one direction the bolder set of black stripes is replaced by maroon with a center stripe of pink twill. a) Cape is 2/3 of a circle with a collar pointed in front, and parted with rounded ‘corners’ in the back. Lined with brown glazed twill cotton. Self bias bound edges. Two bands of narrow olive brown velvet ribbon form a border on the cape and collar. Black elastic thread band and pearl button at neck.b-c) Pair of sleeves to match, fairly narrow, gathered into narrow piped wrist band, closed like neck with elastic thread and pearl button. Lined with brown glazed PW cotton, upper edge bound with cape lining fabric."

Pelerine made of lilac/gold shot silk taffeta, lined with ochre polished cotton. Possibly interlined as well. Truncated triangle shape front and back, extended in a split point over the shoulder. Similarly designed collar on a stand that spreads from the short V neck in center front to form a split point just forward of the shoulder, and in the center back is another descending split point. Edges piped. Narrow cotton tape attached inside of back bottom reaches to front where it should tie without being seen. No loops or hooks to attach it to the front bottom. One hook and eye fastener at neck. Very stylish.

Tan colored linen, all hand stitched. Round shape, discreet border of tamboured scroll work in similar tan and light tan. Threads still hanging inside.

Entirely hand stitched capelet made of cotton velveteen printed with a dark brown ground, covered with off-white polka dots ringed with orange-red loops. The shapes is like those popular in the 1840s and 1850s but the point in the back of the self collar suggests a date around 1865-70 when the burnouse look was popular, Pieced on proper left back side. Lined with pink glazed cotton and interlined with a thin layer of batting.No fasteners.

Entirely hand stitched black silk capelet. Shoulder seams, pointed front and back. Neck opening ‘corners’ rounded gently. Opening trimmed with black gimp. Lined with brown cambric.

Entirely hand stitched fine cotton with warp shadow stripes. Cut in one piece; triangular front and back. Edges piped; bottom edge finished with finely hemmed self frill tapering to nothing at CF corners. Print is cylinder printed in brown with major and minor columns of roses in major and minor sizes. One column is shaded red and the other shaded brown. Two have clumsy blue splotches. The colors appear to have lost the original intended hues.

"Entirely hand stitched brown cotton printed with red and green cartouches. Edged with flat piped self frill; neck edge piped. Lined with pieced, glazed brown PW cotton.Consistent 4” vertical glitch repeats in black and red- don’t repeat sideways: Perrotine printed. Orange and green show 4” repeats of glitches sideways with possible 7” vertical repeat: Block printed.

Lady's capelet made form black silk satin silk, lined with black glazed cotton. Neckline has hook and eye closure, with black ribbed ribbon, not gros-grain or petersham, pleated to fill in neckline. Small tear or break in silk satin in CB. Breaking/shattering of silk from fold lines across shoulder. Came with hand-written note that states: "Belonged to Bets Knudson grandmother Bets gave it to Vi (donor's grandmother, Viola White)."

Waist length capelet, circular, made from purple silk overlaid with black beaded and appliquéd net to create a paisley lace pattern. Adorned with sequins and black jet beads. Gathered lace ruffle over pleated sheet ruffle at bottom edge. 2 black cotton ties at top with hook and eye 2 large black fastened buttons for decoration.

Black papier mache cigar case with rounded ends, 3” x 5.5”. The sides and ends are thin black leather gussets, permitting the case to collapse when empty. The center area of the front surface is filled with a colorful painting of a man in breeches holding a musket, set in a hilly wilderness by a river. The reverse is filled with a sort of gilt marbelized design. Within the case is the inner case with one straight open end, made of heavy, glossy black paper with embossed scroll design. Its rounded end retains the remains of a narrow pull strip.

Black papier mache cigar case with rounded ends, 3” x 5.5”. The sides and ends are thin black leather gussets, permitting the case to collapse when empty. Hand knit golden brown silk embellished with white glass beades worked in a trellisdesign; mounted on a heavy cardboard base. Pointed bottom and squared point at thetop. About 5” long.

Papier mache spectacle case, long rectangular shape with rounded ends. Opens bymeans of hinged flap on the back at one end. Rounded top decorated with gilt border and central scrollwork medallion. 5” long.

Needle case made of brown-dyed horn turned with a knob at each end. No marks. Looks like wood. 3 1/4” long.

Barrel shaped Mauchlin ware emery holder with transfer print, green velvet ends. Scene of Bethlehem, NH showing telegraph poles, people in carriage.

Ivory needle case in form of quiver; lid fits by friction over top of base; top and bottom bands, and spiral rows in between of steel mirrors, once gilt. 3 1/4" long.

Needle case, entirely hand stitched. Rich purple silk embellished with crystal seed beads forming an oval cartouche on front cover, and printed stick-on hand holding a fan saying ""In fond remembrance"" on reverse; inside are 4 flannel semicircles of decreasing sizes, red, white, or blue; pinked edges, and the whole thing is thick enough for pins in the sides; 3x3.5x.5."

Needle case, entirely hand stitched. Fine green silk velvet ribbon cover; light yellow (?) silk brocade ribbon lining; silver clasp with monogram; inner flap missing.

Needle case with perforated paper covers with cross stitched wool designs. One side has a floral border with a wreath surrounding the name which looks like “-utia”; the other side has a nosegay instead of the wreath. Lined, one side with blue rainbow striped satin, the other with brocade stripe with a flower on a bark-like ground. 3 graduated pieces of pale blue flannel with tiny yellow polka dots, pinked edges form leaves for needles. 15 fine needles present. 3” x 3”

Needle case, entirely hand stitched. Icy green (blue) silk satin, hand stitched over cardboard covers, one pocket on each side, little piece of striped navy/ivory (wool?) pile fabric for needles [vesting], like a page in between; pointed flap with matching ribbon for tying. Ivory silk ribbon for sides of pockets. Closed, 2.25" x 3"

Rectangular needlecase/pincushion of white striped brocade velvet. Silk/flannel pages with 7 very fine needles. Red pattern from card within cover is transferring to satin lining. 2.5 x 3 x .5"

Small blue leather folding needlecase lined with muslin. Blue taffeta ribbons attached at either end. Several needles still inserted in muslin lining.

Steel thimble with brass rim. Dents covering most of the thimble. Large size, no mark.

Three ivory thread barrels with screw tops, separate reels inside, one with early single ply very fine cotton (?) thread. Turned groove decoration at top and bottom; thread holes. 1.5"" high.

Entirely machine-stitched child's chemise/slip. Gathered to square draw-string neck. Short tucked sleeves. Sleeves and neckline trimmed with lace. Open-work embroidery at hem.

Heavy handspun, handwoven (likely) linen, white; entirely handstitched with linen; square neckline, 'knee' length, elbow length sleeves. Neckline is the same front and back. Side 1 (front?) is cut of one width without any gore seams; Side 2 has left and right gores added to a width cut narrower so that one selvage remains. The gores extend up slightly beyond the arm seam. Each shoulder is made from a separate piece. The side seams and gore seams are butted even though they are not selvages. The stitching is splendid.Hypothetical procedure: She had one width- the front- from which she removed triangular gore pieces. A strip was cut from one side of the back so the back would be the right width once enlarged with the triangular gores. The rectangle removed thus was used for the shoulders, sleeves and gussets. Very little waste. After the sides and gores were stitched, the shoulders were added with attention to proper total length of chemise. Then the sleeve-gusset assembly was attached.

Heavy cotton, entirely hand stitched; double row of tatted insertion in neckline yoke band and cuff, crocheted edging; Fine back stitching on band and cuffs. Built-in gussets; long reinforcement band along sleeve; puffed sleeves; 1 gore; exquisitely made. Front placket with 1 mother of pearl button

All medium fine linen, somewhat narrow body, flared, but with no gores. Hand stitched with cotton thread; wide scoop neck; gussets. Little gathers at sleeve top; 43” total length. “AC Smith 2” inked center front. Also a previous inking bled through to this piece, indicating they were inked in a series before assembly. Very neat and competent but not exquisite work. Date based on the use of ink for the identification mark.

Entirely, exquisitely hand stitched linen; fine delicate linen lawn ruffles exquisitely embroidered and whipped to sleeve hems; tiny backstitch detail on shoulders & sleeves; gathered sleeves; underarm gussets and reinforcements; wide plainwoven linen tape drawstrings in front & back neckline with tiny eyelets. “Rebecca B. Vose No. 5” inked center front.

All heavy linen, white cotton embroidery, entirely hand stitched, including embroidered edging; machine made flat braidlike trim applied by hand; no gussets; short, wide sleeves; narrow shape without side gores; pointed yoke with square neckline; 1” hem. Fine workmanship.

Entirely hand stitched, all linen; wide neckline band with very fine hand top stitching, puffed sleeves, edged with dimity-like frill edged with tatting. Underarm gussets, gores; front placket with 1 decorated Mother of Pearl button. One-inch hem; “Rogers” inked on front yoke.

Entirely hand-stitched chemise made of cotton (percale). Yoke looks to be embroidered by a child. Simple eyelet design, bold scalloped border. Handmade vandykes edging short straight sleeves. Body and sleeves of coarser cotton. Gusset and gores. Tiny French seams. Butted selvages.

All linen, mostly hand stitched. The top-stitching, on the neck band, placket, and reinforced section at armscye are machine stitched with very tiny stitches. The stitching on the neck band is chain stitched (to the inside). All these have enough imperfection to suggest hand work, like the diagonal set of the underside of the stitches on the placket where most all but sink into the fabric, out of sight. But the scale is miniscule and mind-boggling, and perfectly controlled, even for a machine. Puffed sleeves; finely frilled lawn neck and sleeve edges with tiny tatting trim. Gussets and gores and usual hand techniques and quality; double buttonholes for studs (?). Initials inked inside: “SDS”"

Matching.Vertical tucks across ‘bodice.’ 2 bands of drawn-work effect on each leg, 2 on each sleeve; also form neckline edging and sleeve bands; also machine embroidered edging on these.a) Chemise with deep placket, puffed sleeves, knee length, scoop neck. 2 bands of tucks on each leg; b) Closed drawers with side opening; reinforced crotch. Legs trimmed with frills.

Entirely hand stitched fine linen; gored; short flat sleeves, no gusset but shaped like there was. Broderie Anglaise insertion on top of shoulder. Wide scoop banded neck; tiny piping and fine frill at neck and sleeve edges; front opening with 2 holes for stud or ribbon; name inked on inside: “Cynthia R. Beryf [?]”

Entirely hand-stitched girl’s chemise made of cotton. Neck and sleeve is edged with a single row of tatted rings. Straight sleeves with gathers at the top. Scoop neckline with tiny gussets at point where neckline nears armscye. Underarm gussets; one gore.

All cotton except for linen sleeves, entirely hand stitched; front has inset panel of 5 vertical rows of ruched cotton strips joined by drawn thead insertion; similar treatment of sleeve tops, which are straight; edging of ruffled band of drawn threadwork and lace on sleeves and lace on sleeves and scoop neckline. No gussets, gores; 1” [hem?] Rather short.
