White cotton net embroidered with white cotton and linen of various weights. Bottom edge scalloped with attached picots. Each scallop has small flower with leaves. Flounce has 4 large sprays of flowers with leaves having various lacy centers and solid or airy fillings. Florets scattered over ground. Top edge finished with overcast thread for substance. One seam in side to form tube. May or may not have been originally one piece, perhaps a frill from a skirt bottom. Limerick? 11” deep by 31” circumference.

Large Arborescent flowers, machined ground scrolling design of flowers in yellow, purple, and pink with green vegetation. Meandering floral vine pattern black details.

Bottom of the front panel or tablier of infant’s long gown, thick, elaborate Ayreshire embroidery on fine white cambric. Robings. Seed stitch, satin stitch, eyelets and simple drawn thread fillings. Large central design of pomegranite with what look like seed heads and daisies. Worked dagged edges on hems.

Panel of striped dimity made from two 27" widths, finely butted together by hand along selvages-total length 99 5/8". 1.5" hem on one end, 3/8" hem on the other facing opposite sides. One side and the deep-hemmed end have a plain weave tap attatched at the edge to which the fringe is sewn. the other two sides have the fringe attatched directly. Fringe on the latter short side is very tattered. Various traces of previous stitch line.

Length of very fine linen or cotton with narrowly hand hemmed sides and deep hem across one long end, above which is a loose meander of narrow linen braid.

Segment of neckline trim probably from a chemise or petticoat. Doubly scalloped with simple floral spray pattern, Broderie Anglaise.

Neckline cut from a chemise, simple coarse Broderie Anglaise floral border. Goes with cut off chemise sleeves 2009.041.16, so this is dated to go with the date given for the sleeves although I don’t believe these are really that early.

Hem border of fine muslin with dagged border ornamented with concentric satin stitch line between rows of large eyelets.

Two triangular panels with the remains of adjoining sections on 2 sides, the other being finely hemmed in a curve. Don’t seem to be parts of caps. Identical carnation and leaf design on each.

Two pieces of embroidered lawn with large cutwork flowers and leaves backed with net. Might have been part of 2009.041.22.

Fragment of a fine white cotton petticoat (or drawers) hem. Two bands of four tucks, finely hand stitched, above embroidered eyelet leaf fronds and daisies with a double scalloped edge.

Silvered tin fasteners. Padded; 5 rows of spring encased in off-white cotton. Together the legend perhaps reads something like “separate charms joined together” or “I secure each charm” [ie leg]? The fastener does not match the other one exactly, but the attributes of materials, craftsmanship and style in number 93.111.2 are too similar to explain these as anything but a reunited pair - like the pair 90.142 + 93.111.1

One pair of white kid gloves in orginal packaging. The gloves have metal clasps at the wrists, and the inside of the gloves are marked with blue manufacturer marks and sizing information. The paper package is yellow, and was sold by the Fourth Street Kid Glove Emporium at Taylor, Miller & Co. The glove manufacturer won two prize medals at the 1862 International Exhibtion, held in England, and two at the 1867 Paris L'exposition Universelle. The back of the package has the pencil inscription: "Mr. Mitchell."

The gloves have metal clasps at the wrists, and the inside of the gloves are marked with blue manufacturer marks, sizing information, and pattern lines. The paper package is pink and was sold by L.C. Hopkins & Co. of Cincinnati. The glove manufacturer is Alexandre.

Indecipherable stamped mark inside left one, and ditto signature.Very similar to 2004.027

Fine beige kid gloves, just above wrist length. 3 medium length orange-brown points, heavyish stitching. Long placket at inside wrist with 10 tiny flat hooks like the ones on boots, over which a tan silk cord may be laced back and forth to close the glove. No label. These are much bigger, and the others [2002.104] may be a teen size. Almost identical to 2002.104

Hand knit linen elbow-length gloves. Long, straight points; the center one topped with a little symmetrical scroll and the other two with a diamond each. Cuff border is an outlined band with “3 block” checker pattern.

Young girl’s white kid gloves, wrist length, with fine points ending at finger seams. Bound top edge. Gussets at thumb and between fingers. Single brass button. No marks.

Pair of reproduction white kid gloves, comparatively thick leather. Hand stitched turned-in seams, plied cotton or linen thread. Hole-punched scalloped cuffs. Long oval thumb hole with no gusset. Printed in turquoise with tiny Jacques Callot (17th century printmaker) figures. Inside cuff bears hand inked size 6 3/4, and stamped label that is indistinguishable. Another bit says: Gant de Luke Fait a la main. Another stamped label in sans serif letters: DIRECTOIRE 1785-1788. Compared to gloves c1800 and c1850, these are coarse.

Partly machine-stitched infant’s cooler made of windowpane dimity. Very long, no waist. Short puffed sleeves with piped armscyes. Vandykes forming a Tablier effect down the front, and minuscule vandykes along sleeve and neck edges. Drawstring neckline. Plain hem.

Entirely hand-stitched dressing gown or robe made from one layer of plain-woven cloth (thin tan silk warp and white cotton weft completely white selvage). Speculated to have been dyed with logwood or the like, however it almost entirely faded away now. It is unlined except for a soft, coarse cotton lining in the back bodice. The sleeves are pieced at the top. It has a shawl collar with bound and piped edges, and long sleeves with modestly large tops. Full skirt is gathered into the back waist but no waist in front. No cuffs. Drawstring in casing in back inside to pull back close to body. No evidence of fasteners.

Dressing gown entirely hand stitched of thin cotton printed with dense dark brown vine design. V-neckline opens part way down front, waistless in front, piped waist in back, bodice gathered into center back waist; some fullness of back neck as well. Bodice front fullness gathered into piped shoulder seams. Concealed faced slit on proper left for access to tied-on pocket. Narrow sleeves with piped armscyes, lined with sturdy cotton, two rows of corded shirring at wrist, hook and loop closure. Short attached self belt extending from side seams. Bodice lined with heavy cream twilled cotton with single bust dart on either side; front sections free of dress fabric. No bones.

Entirely hand stitched child’s robe of plain weave cotton plaid; blue, tan and pink. Wide collar, yoke with piped seams. Gathered body; no waist in front; 3/4” casing in back waist. Self-ties, 1” wide, tiny hems; anchored within at sides, emerge from slots in front.

Entirely hand-stitched child’s wrapper or dressing gown made of printed cotton with a textured weave. Lapis print with puzzle-piece paisley effect. Printed border; speculated to be for a apron. Self-double layered throughout. Bound neck and armscye seams. Wide circular cape collar. Flaring sleeves with controlled pleats at top. No cuffs.

Entirely hand-stitched dressing gown made of nankeen. Yoke with wide curved collar pointed in back with a faced hem. Straight body pleated onto yoke all around. Wide sleeves with pleats at top and wrist retained with 2 rows of tan silk chain-stitch. Cuffs have a hook and loop closure. Back and front pleats retained at high waist with 2 rows of tan silk elongated chain-stitch. Piped yoke seams and armscyes. Cuffs, collar edge and front edges embellished with needlepoint rosebud clusters executed in red, olive, black, light and dark blue wool. 1 1/4” tuck just above hem, released. No evidence of front fasteners or ties. Speculated to have had a capelet. This is evident by the flowers stopping short of the chest area.

Entirely machine-stitched infant dressing gown made of white pique cotton in a princess style. Opens completely down the front. Coat-like sleeves. Self robings on either side. Turndown collar and cuffs are edged with self-frills.

Entirely hand-stitched dressing gown made of citron green silk taffeta with a modes brocade floral stripe, quilted with paired-line diamonds. It has a narrow, roundcollar, waist in back with piped seam into which the back skirt is gathered; waistless front cut to hand with an angled overlap in front; no fasteners except for a pair of olive silk tapes run through seperate channels at the inside waist, meant to gather the back a little more while typing in front to bring it closer to the weaver's back. Very low armsyces, piped, with narrow sleeves slightly larger at the top. Lined with light brown lining cambric. No pockets, belts, or ties. No evidence of pinning at the throat. Seems a very likely candidate for maternity wear or for a fairly large woman.

Entirely hand-stitched man’s dressing gown, except for the topstitching close to the edges of the collar, front opening, and welts. Made of dimity (textured cotton) with large-scale lapis print in stripes. Double-breasted except it lacks the second row of buttonholes and flat, self-covered buttons. Small collar, wide-elbowed coat sleeves, long body with the center back seam and side back seam, with a distinct flare at the sides. Two side and one breast pockets with bound openings and brown glazed cotton bags. Lined with thin, scarlet wool flannel.

Small child's dressing gown of printed cotton in a cream and red plaid or crisscross pattern. Mostly machine-sewn with some hand-finishing inside. Long body with slight train in CB. CF opening of buttons, milk glass (some missing), and hand-finished buttonholes. High round neckline with small frill trimming edge of same printed cotton fabric. Long sleeves cut from one pieces, trimmed at wrist with same cotton print frill. Neckline, wrist cuff, front sides, and CF flanking CF opening are applies strips of printed cotton in red and white. Small red chain pattern cut diagonally. CB seam.

Adult lady's cotton dressing gown. CF opening all the way to hem, closure of buttons of MOP, none missing. Drooping shoulder line with sleeves (long) sewn into body of dressing gown with gathering at top and back. NO gussets under arms. Piping at armscye between body and sleeves. Overlay that is yoke-like or pelerine-like in shape, emphasizing drooping shoulder line. This area is covered in white soutache braiding in swirling pattern with floral sprigs in center of each panel on either breast. Yoke/pelerine panel across shoulder has a scalloped edge, with is finished with machine embroidery. Sleeves are finished with button cuff ( buttons present), also finished with the same soutache braiding details. CF opening has with same machine-finished scalloped edge, but no soutache. Hem is 2.5" deep. High round neckline. Almost entirely machine-stitched, save for the buttonholes. Small rip/tear in back of body of dressing gown.

Morning dress, entirely hand stitched, made of block printed cotton, grayish reticulated ground with small sprays of colorful flowers, 2-step green, red, pink, yellow, blue and black. The bodice is gathered from the back shoulder seam over the bust to the waistband, stayed just below the front shoulder by a piped ‘strap’. V neckline plunges to the waistband which is higher in front. A wide self pelerine, with self frill, is attached to the neckline with piping. Enormous sleeve tapering sharply to the narrow cuff that buttons with one fancy MOP button. One sleeve has a stitch taken in the back above the elbow, presumably to help shape the sleeve draping. Skirt opens part way below the waistband which closes with a pair of hooks and eyes. Skirt is smooth at CF, has pleats at sides and back, the CB has tight gauffered fullness. Bodice and sleeves lined with substantial white cotton, suggesting that was enough to give the desired fullness and shaping without puffs. The hem is faced with white cotton.

Adult lady's dressing gown of white cotton, plain weave. Tucking and detail work exactly the same as chemise 2024.33.004. CF opening all the way down to them - placket is flat band of cotton trimmed with white cotton flounce and edged with picot. All buttons are pressed milk glass buttons - same as the chemise. Yoke-like shoulder dressing that extends in CB and CF in a point. This section consists of many small tuckets, punctuated by vertical rows of faggoted picoting. High round neckline with same treatment at neck opening as placket front - a band of white cotton trimmed in a flounce, with picot edge. Long curved sleeves, with cuff having same panel treatment as yoke, with finished band and flounce, with picot edge. Vertical tucks flank both sides of CF placket opening. Almost entirely machine-stitched, with some interior hand-finishing. Body of dressing gown has some period repairs, and minor stains from unideal storage from donor.

Morning dress, entirely hand stitched brown printed cotton, ‘dreidl’ triplet motifs in tan and white. No waist; shallow yoke with ‘body’ gathered into it all around. Wide spread collar edged with piped, flat self frill. Open halfway down CF, continuing to hem with narrow tuck. Modestly swelled gigot sleeves, no cuffs; small wrist vent. All seams and sleeve ends piped. Self belt attached at CB with French tack. Yoke lined with thin, tan cotton. No fasteners.

Infant sleeping gown of cotton pale cream cotton flannel. Machine-sewn with some hand-finishing. Long body, with long sleeves that slightly curve. Gathers at wrist into a wristband, with sleeve head gathers at top of sleeves, rather than set into back. Wrist cuffs, shoulder yoke, and CF placket are of a cotton flannel printed with blue stripes - very faded. HIgh round neckline. Unlined.

Fine white cotton dressing gown, machine stitched. Open all the way down. Beautiful machine (Swiss) embroidered edging; insertion alternated with ruching compose a deep pointed yoke front and back; no gussets; extra fullness in back; long, full sleeves gathered into cuffs with embroidered frills. Frill around high round bound neckline and edge of yoke. Splendid craftsmanship. A tour de force, whether machine made or not.

Heavy white cotton, entirely hand stitched, including broderie anglaise down the front and on short standing collar; 2 -.5” mother of pearl buttons on cuff (1 missing), 7 3/8” same on front (top one missing) from collar to hem edge. Drop shoulders, reinforced back, yoke and front armhole area. Slightly gathered sleeve cap, full sleeve gathered into embroidered cuff. Open all the way down.

Entirely hand stitched; brown/tan cotton rainbow stripe print lined with lesser-quality print; round collar with pleated edging; gathered front with straps at upper chest, fitted back bodice with added very long self ties; hook and self ties at neck; Gigot sleeves; no other fasteners- evidence of other fasteners-- evidence of pinholes in strap closure.

Cotton, rather cheap and pieced, entirely hand stitched. Small standing collar with narrow frill edged with simple tatting; full sleeves gathered into bands edged with double frill. Gores in each sleeve side and side front and back; front opening full length with decorative mother of pearl buttons. She used cheap cloth but made it look pretty.

Entirely hand stitched white plainwoven cotton. Hip length, flared bias body cut in 2 pieces with pieces added at curved front corners. Back seam joined selvages. Straight 1 pc sleeves some gathers at the top and piping at armscye, ricrak trim on sleeve ends. Frill at loose round neckline; 6” self ties at neck, 3 small white china inkwell buttons.

All heavy cotton, entirely hand stitched, including some 35 buttonholes; ribbed pleated-effect trim outlines the pointed yoke with dropped shoulders and piped armscyes; gussets under the full sleeves gathered into cuffs trimmed with coarse lace. Wide flaring shape with gores. Open all the way down; ribbed white glass buttons.

Entirely hand stitched dressing gown of cotton, brown print. Brown ground with leaflet in reserve. Small frilled capelet attached clumsily as collar. LInen tape drawstrings in casing inside back. Bone buttons and loops. Gigot sleeves with slit, loose front with loose belt. Print lining replacement in front from shoulder area. Back bodice lined with same fabric as hem facing. Seems remodelled; sleeve hems shortened, front hem ditto. Lining is a later addition and sleeves seem to be reset.

Entirely hand stitched heavy white cotton. Simple, narrow eyelet embroidery strip down full length center front opening with mother of pearl buttons. Gored body, dropped armscyes. Slightly baggy sleeves gathered into narrow bands. Neck and wrists edged with 2” eyelet embroidered frills. No yoke or gathers at upper body.

Entirely hand-stitched dressing gown made of heavy unbleached cotton. Narrow arm reinforcements. Open to hem (knee-length). Full-sleeve with narrow cuff with MOP button. Narrow standing collar. 4 deep gores. 1.5” hem. Narrow rikrak edging at neck, opening, cuffs, and placket.

Entirely hand stitched white cotton robe. High waistline, surplice front with ‘peter pan’ collar. Underarm seam. Tiny pleats at neck and waist seam in bodice front allow for bust. Long, straight skirt with gored side panels, fullness concentrated across back. Very long slim sleeves with some fullness at top, rather deeply set into bodice. Self tab buttons around wrist with Dorset button. Collar, front edge, hem and sleeve ends finished with self frill. Self ties attached at side waist. Two narrow linen tape ties remain on skirt front edges- one on left at bottom and one on right at center. Made for a tall woman with very slender frame- very small back and shoulders.

Entirely hand stitched finely ribbed white dimity. Collar on deep stand comes together straight across front of neck; has 1 3/4” frill of sheer muslin with rather deep (1/4”) hem. 11’ long, 3/4” muslin tie at neck. Flared body gathered slightly front and back into piped shoulder seams; full-length front opening with 1/4” hem; 1/2” hem around bottom. Sleeves gathered into piped armscyes, moderate fullness at top tapering to wrist, gathered into 1 1/4” cuffs with 1 1/4” finely hemmed muslin frills. Incised 1/4” 4-hole MOP button and buttonhole at base of cuffs, and one at bustline in front opening.

Entirely hand stitched silk brocade, deep cobalt blue with broad black stripes with blue nosegays. Open all down front, which is bordered with black silk velvet. Hem finished with black wool braid. Rather high, straight waist with self belt attached at each side seam. Pleated fullness, more in back. High round neckline. Pagoda sleeves with black silk velvet turnback cuffs. Bodice boned, lined with brown coutil; inner front floating bodice with hand stitched eyelets. Skirt lined with brown cotton. Insides of ends of sleeves and opening faced with blue silk. Hook and eye closure on bodice.

Entirely hand stitched, fine white ribbed dimity. 3/4, full body gathered onto shallow yoke with piped edge, piped armscyes. Somewhat straight sleeves, slightly fuller at top and ending simply as tubes. Yoke has been neatly extended further over edge of shoulders, with same materials. High round neck with fine knit lace frill whipped onto piping [?]. 7 tiny MOP buttons part way down front which does open the whole way.

Entirely hand stitched fine white cotton. Hip length, straight body (side seams are butted selvages) gathered into neck band finished with a self frill. One 3/8” MOP button and buttonhole. Shoulder seams on top of shoulder, joined by narrow insertion with little bobbles that look like French knots. Dropped piped armscyes; moderately full sleeves gathered slightly into narrow cuffs edged with self frill, closed with small white china button and buttonhole. Upper and lower back sections of each sleeve is pieced. Front and bottom 1” hems, hemstitched. No gussets, gores or reinforcements.

Entirely hand stitched dress or robe, open all the way down. Vaguely shaped smooth bodice with wide neckline, not skillfully stitched. Inset waistband, bottom part of back section made into casing carrying an apple green silk flat braid drawstring emerging at the sides. Long tubular sleeves with some fullness at the top back. Skirt gathered onto waistband evenly all around. Lower part of the skirt has 4 small brown bone turned buttons that fit into small tabs on the underside of the opposite skirt panel. Lined with what appears to be an indigo blue ground cylinder-printed with a resist vine pattern, and over-dyed with a raised mineral blue that has responded to contact with a perspiring back. Also there are two tiny eyelets inside the center back above the waist. It appears the dress was altered by adding the waistband. Early cylinder print (brown) typical of the 20s. A good DIY inexpensive garment, probably what she wore in the morning while doing chores.

Dressing gown, entirely hand stitched printed cotton. The print is a naturalistic trellis of white coral branches, each space filled with a small white flower on a dark brown ‘bed’ with radiating tentacles on a light brown ground. The lining is a cheaper fabric, rust, tan and dark brown stripes with vine spacers. The front is waist-less, the back skirt gathered into a waistline beneath a single drawstring casing. Drawstring is faded pink linen tape. Long, full sleeves gathered into cuffs; rows of shirring control fullness at top. Narrow band collar, dropped armscyes. No piping. Small khaki colored china buttons and buttonholes from neck to floor. Approximately 18” self ties attached at side seams. Can be expanded for maternity wear.

Entirely hand stitched thin cotton dressing gown. Wide white cross checks on brown ground. Pieced a lot. Skirt gathered onto piped waist in back. The back bodice is tightly shirred at waist and neckline with a sparse row of shirring across shoulder blades. No drawstrings. V-neckline opening extends to below waist. Full sleeves with rows of shirring at top, two at wrist above band cuff. Pocket slit at proper left. Long self ties attached at side seams. Bodice and sleeves lined with heavy cream plain weave cotton recycled from dress use, pieced at wrist. Front sections free of dress fabric with two straight pins at the ready in angled position. Two more are ready for service stuck into outside of proper left cuff. Can be expanded for maternity wear

Entirely hand stitched white dimity morning dress. Besides front and back there are side back panels , side gores installed backwards! Long, slightly full sleeves, set well into back with fullness toward back; slightly flared at wrist. No waist in front, open to knees. Upper opening curved to suggest a surplice opening. Collar on stand. Fairly high waist, self tie attached in CB where it is edged with frills; uneven shaped ends suggesting use of scraps to complete job. Collar, sleeve ends, proper right opening to hem all edged with doubled, plain calico frill. No fasteners apart from ties. Bodice lined with white cotton. Nicely made. A great deal of piecing inside collar stand; ties are not symmetrical, apparently cut from scraps.

Entirely hand-stitched dressing gown made of coarse Z-singles cotton cloth with Z2S cotton thread. The design consists of a block print with tomato-red ground with white bandana-type spots and a bit of the colored border remaining on the front hem. Side seams with two gores like a chemise. Long tubular sleeves turned up and crudely gathered at the wrist. Pleats at back neckline covered with facing of homemade blue checked linen. Slit on either side of the neck accommodates narrow pleats of the front section, forming a graceful fit of the front opening. Twice-turned narrow hem. Unlined. Adapted for later use by forming a casing across the back just below the armpits, into which 2 linen tape ties are run in opposite directions, to emerge from the side seam for tying in front. Evidence of pinning. Five patches of the same cloth, apparently from a scrap bag- color bright and threads firm. Some are stitched with blue-dyed Z singles linen. Golden brown linen was used to stitch the casing and white for some patches. Golden brown linen is also used on front and back hems, and neck facing.

Entirely machine-stitched princess-style house dress made by a dressmaker, some letting out of seams. Dark maroon printed cotton. Unlined. Standing collar, fairly narrow sleeves ending in self-frill. Fairly smooth fit over hips, trained with gathers under an applied band behind knees. Not adjustable. Side pockets are low on each hip. Buttons to within 1 foot of ruffle hem. The top button is concealed, top 6 are black-lacquered brass ‘deer and doe’ cutout metal. The remainder are odd militia or military buttons which seem to be the originals. Trimmed with bands of complementary floral print forming a V in front of neck and square in back; tops of pockets, cuffs, top and bottom edges of hem ruffle, and aforementioned band behind knees. A possibility for maternity wear.

Partly machine-stitched child’s robe or dressing gown made of machine printed cotton. Opens the full length. It has one self belt anchored at each side. MOP button to fasten the opposite belt. No collar. Yoked body. Short, wide, and straight sleeves. Turnback cuffs edged with narrow self selvedge frills which also edges the opening all the way around the neck. Unlined.

Dressing gown, mostly machine stitched cotton printed with black pin stripe and floral design. Fairly large coat sleeves, large trained tent shape. ‘Peter pan’ collar. Black printed diamond border applied at edge of collar, opening, cuff and along edge of pretend pointed cuff. Upper section lined. Pearl buttons on fake full-length opening.

Dressing gown of tan grenadine with white windowpane checks. Bodice and skirt have center sections of petal pink soft flannel from neck to hem; full length opening; waistband and cuffs of the same piped in grenadine. Sleeve seam piped in pink! Round waist, high round neckline, bishop sleeves. Pleated skirt. Released pleats radiate from CB waist; same in front. Bodice lined with white cambric, floating in front, with bones and hooks. Skirt unlined, hem faced; 6 horizontal tucks above hem. All 15 flat glass buttons with small gold centers present;, functional below waist.

Hand-stitched child's dressing gown made of cotton with a paisley stripe design. Buttoned down the center front. Borders, cuffs and down the center front are trimmed with a small dotted calico print. The inner lining is stripped.
