Entirely hand stitched long mitts with thumbs, bias-cut ivory silk taffeta, outer sides joined with decorative pink silk thread herringbone fagotting, also used to form reverse curved cutaway ornament on the underside. Pink herringbone points. Pointed flap over fingers lined with darker silk. Edges finished with herringbone stitches.

Mitts, HK linen, lace pattern 1740-1770 Hand knit linen elbow-length mitts with thumb and point over back of hand lined with fine linen. The inside of the arm has rather elaborate lacy pattern of symmetrical scrolls on a field of “dots.” Top has 6 parallelograms in border.

Mitts, HK cotton lace pattern with beads "Pair of mitts, hand knit white cotton worked in a lace or openwork pattern with single opening for fingers. About 11” long. Toothed edge at top. Blue and gold vine around wrist; green and blue one around top; red dagged border at bottom. The rest is a mesh with pairs of metallic gold and transparent red and blue seed beads worked along the way to form color bands; there are the odd pink and green ones, and a section where the requisite beads were unavailable... the pattern does not seem precisely followed, and the right colors of beads were not always available as the knitting progressed, suggesting these were not a product of the German cottage industry. Pair of mittens, large. Hand knit of tightly spun and worked cream S3Z wool that seems to have the regularity of twist and diameter indicative of machine spinning; it looks like string (see 2007.041). Pile made of very tightly spun fine Z single dark variegated (natural?) brown wool is worked into the structure, retaining a wiry or shaggy appearance. Thumbs on side. Rounded shape with short cuff. Rows of red-orange, dark brown and light rust form a border around the edge; no other decoration. 11 1/2” long.

Pair of mittens, large. Hand knit of tightly spun and worked cream Z2S wool that seems to have the irregularity of twist and diameter indicative of hand spinning. Pile is worked into the structure, apparently the same yarn which lofts amazingly. Thumbs on side. Slightly pointy shape with short cuff. A row of blue yarn forms a line around the wrist, longer white tufts form a fuzzy line down the middle, with blue and red dots and tufts forming ‘branches.’ Longer tufts of cream and red wool on cuff; there are faded lavender spots around the open spaces and a line of it near the edge of the cuff. 11 3/4” long.

Tiny infant mittens hand knit of fine ivory wool with crocheted lacy pink wool cuffs. Little rosebud [?] worked in shades of red and green wool and (now) blue silk. Ombre rose and white silk cord with tassels around wrist.

Pair of child's mitts in deep red colorway. Made from machine-knit fine wool or cashmere - fibers have very fine cuticle under microscope. Wrist, finger and thumb openings have decorative bands of kitting design. Seam up inner (thumb) side of mitts.

Money belt made of smooth tan cowhide. Basic form is a leather band folded over twice lengthwise to form a row of 3 compartments covered by a continuous flap; the stitching between compartments is machine-stitched; each corner is secured with a lacquered rivet; the ends are machine-stitched but one retains holes indicating a earlier presence of hand stitching; the back bottom of the belt has a series of slits formed by punching a circle out at each corner then cut to connect the dots; through these slots a belt is threaded that once tapered to a narrow tie strip at each end; it has been adapted to have a cast metal buckle at each end, machine stitched in place; there is a short leather strip knotted once at each top corner and another in the center under flap.

Morning dress of white cotton dimity, lined around armscye with white linen. Neckline has been turned into a shallow V through an inexpert tuck taken at top of center front seam. Fastens behind with two buttons at center back and two self-fabric ties that run through parallel channels at high waist and come to tie at center front. Front bodice is slightly darted to fit; back bodice is made with body gathered tightly to yoke. Long, straight sleeves gathered at top of sleeve head. Tuck runs around skirt just above hem. Hand sewn.

One piece morning dress of black with orange floral print. Cut on princess lines with fitted bodice and high round neckline (collar missing?). Simple, cut on curved lines, long sleeves. Simple, floor-length skirt buttoning from hem to neck; seaming at bodice back becomes wide pleats front waist to hem. Skirt has slight train. Black velvet banding on cuffs, hem, pocket, and down entire front length of gown, and bows at neck back, front and pocket. Possibly worn over bustle.

Morning dress of white cotton muslin, unlined except for shoulder straps (which are lined in the same muslin), with somewhat low waistline for the period. Wide neckline, holding a drawstring of cotton cord; bodice fitted with two darts on either side and light gathering in the center. Back of waistline also has a drawstring of the same cotton cord. Skirt is slightly gathered at center front and more heavily gathered in back, and trimmed with twelve horizontal tucks above a deep hem. Long, straight sleeves. Hand sewn.

Morning dress of sheer white cotton muslin, tamboured with small foliate sprigs. Round neckline, bound with muslin; no shaping to front of bodice. Center back closure, with drawstrings at neckline and high waistline. Linen tape is sewn into waist seam and armscyes. Shoulder seams are finished inside. Skirt is gathered to bodice in back, is decorated with three groups of three tucks around the bottom, and has a muslin ruffle above the hem. Overlong sleeves, gathered to bands at the wrist which fasten with dorset thread buttons, and finished with ruffles. Hand sewn.

Morning dress of very light lavender silk crepe, lined in the bodice with white cotton. Wide but shallow neckline, bound and piped with crepe. Center back closure with nine hooks and eyes. Front of bodice is fitted with a single dart on either side; whole bodice is pieced in silk layer just above waistline. Waist seam has a linen tape added to it for strength. Side back seams piped, as are armscyes and shoulder seams. Overlong sleeves are gathered to armscye and pieced at wrist. Skirt is gathered to waistline and has three tucks just above hem. Hand sewn.

Morning dress of white cotton muslin, lined in the back and sides with white linen. Rounded turn-down collar. Bodice buttons down front with six domed thread buttons; apron-front skirt fastens to lowest button with a thread loop at center point. Back of skirt is gathered to bodice. A thick white cotton cord ending in a tassel is sewn to each side of the apron and runs across the back, held with cord loops; these tie at center front. Very long sleeves, gathered at shoulder, likely intended to be held with bracelets at wrist. Hand sewn.

Morning dress of fine checked cotton (pink, white, and green stripes crossed with white and blue), lined in the bodice with white cotton. Wide, shallow neckline, gathered in back, and bound in checked cotton. Center back closure, fastening down lining with four mother of pearl buttons (replaced) and outwardly with a mother of pearl button at back of neck and two hooks and eyes in inset waistband. Bodice is cut on the bias in front and gathered at front and back waist. Full elbow-length sleeves are tightly gathered to armscye. Skirt is tightly gathered across back and has two tucks above hem. Hand sewn.

Morning dress of off-white/grey silk crepe, faded from lavender, lined with white cotton. Wide, rounded neckline, gathered on blue linen cord inside hem, but fastening at center back with a hook and eye; cotton cord drawstring at waist. Front of bodice is shaped with very small amount of gathering at center. Skirt is top-stitched to bodice in front and gathered across back, with no slit at center back. There are two flat tucks and two padded tucks above padded skirt hem. Overlong sleeves are gathered to armscyes.

Morning or walking dress of dark brown polished/glazed cotton, lined with a slightly lighter brown polished cotton in the bodice, made as separate layers in front, where they open; neither layer has apparent closures above the waist. Turn-down collar attached only to outer layer. Drawstring channels at natural waist, to tie at front, with self-fabric buttons down front slit of skirt. Ends of short self-fabric belt meet at center front, likely intending to fasten with straight pins (like bodice). Skirt gathered to bodice. Long, straight sleeves. Hand sewn.

Two piece morning dress or lounging robe of paisley design (greens ?, pinks, browns, blues, etc.) on deep cream. A) Semi-fitted front bodice bloused at shirted front waist. Long, full sleeves gathered into wide cuffs trimmed with greenish brown sateen bands. Bodice pleated in rear into sateen waist band. Full floor length skirt with deep gathered flounce at hem and closing up entire center front, edged with satin band, into high rounded neckline. Three satin decorative buttons at bodice front. A morning dress of cotton, printed with blue and green foliate motifs closely packed on a yellow-green background, lined in the bodice with white linen. Center front closure on drawstrings at neckline and below bust; opening extends down to roughly mid abdomen, with a tiny self-fabric button halfway between lower drawstring and bottom of slit. Hem of proper left side of opening becomes a tuck running down to hem. Long, loose sleeves, gathered to armscye; bottom of sleeve curves in for wrist, then out again to cover hand up to knuckle. Hand sewn.

One piece morning dress of blue / brown / gold paisley design on cream ground. Garment falls full and loose from front and back yoke, without waistline. Buttons up front into high, rounded neckline with wide peter-pan collar gathered into neckline. Long, full sleeves gathered into frill at cuffs. Unlined

"Made of smooth, lustrous white feathers with soft taupe ones accenting the edges. (Karen Augusta identified them as grebe feathers*). May or may not be teen-sized. A superb, elegant goody.*Maybe Eared Grebe? see below1. Small muff lined with lavender-gray silk; no cords or pockets worked into it. 2. pair of cuffs lined with ivory China silk, hand stitched. 3. narrow scarf symmetrically closed in front near the throat, secured by a silk cord looped over a pair of net-covered silk thread dome buttons. The ends have as ‘fringe’ darker wing tips. Lined with ivory China silk, hand stitched. "

Girl’s muff of ermine. Lined with thin bodice-weight white twill cotton, typical of mid-century; facing of thin pale pink plain weave silk around openings was made into neat casing for a simple plain-weave thin silk ribbon (also period-typical) made into a modest bow on each side. Stuffed with coarse horsehair with a layer of cotton batting next to the skins, which are hand-sewn together.

Child's blonde mohair muff with claps purse on top. Wool batting as stuffing/interfacing. Inside is lined with shredded silk. Twist braid cord of cotton attaches to both ends.

Muff and neckpiece of ermine. Muff (1) - lined with turquoise wool, faced at the outside with turquoise silk; heavily wadded; heavy white silk cord run through a casing at the opening' cord emerges and is finished with elaborate decorative tassels ending in tufts of fleece; accented with 9 ermine tails. Neckpiece (2) - lined with thin ivory silk; wraps around neck, the narrower end fitted through a slot in the wider rounded end; a snap top probably added later to inner tip of narrow end; the other part is not present; accented with 5 ermine tails and the ends have fancy knotted ivory silk tassels. Box (3a) - black paper covered cylindrical box cushioned with 2 sheets of 1939 Boston Patriot newspaper; yellow edge binding. Lid (3b) - lid with stitches showing; cut corner plate blue printed label reading "Established in 1838 W.M. Shute & Son, importers and manufactures of Ladies Rich Dress Furs...173 and 175 Washington St, Boston."

Needle case of grey-green silk covered pasteboard forming a triangular case with zigzag top edge. Bound with gold paper. Inside are three triangular pieces of fine flannel edged with blanket stitching, center one cross stitched “LS.” Four fine needles remain in place.3” long piece of silk ribbon attached to flannel points, inserted through slot at base of case to pull flannel back into the case.3” long x 2.5” wide."

2” ball of z2s soft white cotton thread with 4 double pointed steel knitting needles, one loose and the other three still inserted in a 2” long tubular form, probably a stocking since it has a 1/2” simple hem finish worked around the end. There is a strange section near the needles that looks like it wants to be a design— but failed. The knitting is of rather uneven quality: a child’s work, abandoned?

6 double-ended needles, plating come off 4 larger ones; also bundle of 10 smaller ones. Readily recognized by the dealer as being used for knitting in the round, like stockings."

Nightgown for a nursing mother or invalid. Entirely hand-stitched, made of lightweight but sturdy cotton. Floor length; front piece cut at an angle half way down each side to provide gores at the bottom, butted seams. Back appears to go selvage to selvage; front and back bodies gathered into a collar stand with fine percale frill. Shoulder seams but no reinforcements or underarm gussets, fairly dropped armscyes. Long sleeves taper to cuffless wrists, fullness at the top. 15" front opening placket secured with 2 pairs of twill tape ties.

Woman’s ankle-length nightgown of cream colored cotton (muslin?), with front plaquet opening into scoop neckline edged with coarse handcrocheted lace, also used on sleeves. Elbow-length sleeves cut in one with bodice, without defining waistline. Very basic garment.

Nightgown of ivory silk crepe-de-chine. Rounded neckline is a yoke of ivory cotton lace, with a piece of net added below it at the front that has an applied design of leaves, vines, and flowers leading to a medallion in the center; crepe-de-chine straps added over shoulders, and whole armscye is edged with an ivory cotton net ruffle. Body is slightly gathered to yoke in front. Net ruffle added to hem.

Infant nightgown made of white lawn. Eyelet collar.

Ankle length nightgown of heavy cotton calico, buttoning up front placket into squarish, flat neckline, with saddle yoke, and vertically tucked front yoke. Long, wide sleeves, finished with cuffs of eyelet embroidery. Inked on inside of placket: Barrows

Nightgown Lace trim on collar. Yokes smocked front and back. Long sleeves with lace trim at cuffs. Belonged to Mr. Bodensteiner's great aunt.

Woman’s floor-length nightgown of white cotton, opening partway up the front into round neckline finished with turndown collar of machinemade Torchon lace. Straight yoke back and front, front is decorated with vertical insets of matching lace. Long, very full sleeves gathered into armsceye and gathered at wrists into band of cotton braid finished with frill of matching lace.

Shirtlike form that appears to be a bathing costume (or perhaps some form of bed or hospital gown?) for a girl. Entirely hand stitched heavy white cotton. Made with flaring shape like a chemise (no vents), the width on each front side augmented with a strip from shoulder to hem, joined by butting selvages on the left only. Underarm gussets under full-length, rather skimpy shirt sleeves gathered into cuffs with buttons, one a simple dorset, the other a pressed pewter. Neck gussets, 2 “ standing collar secured with pair of PW linen tape ties. No reinforcements. Deep front slit with bias gusset. “S Russell 4” inked at proper LF near collar.

Entirely hand-stitched infant nightgown made of white cotton dimity. Drawstring in the neck. Turnback slightly pointed cuffs. Back opening. Crocheted lace trim on neckline and cuffs. Sleeves have slight fullness at the top. Embroidered insertion at (natural) waist-front gathered area to which self-sashes are attached.

Entirely hand-stitched infant nightgown made of cotton sheer dimity. Linen bobbinet drawstrings in the neckline. Bobbin lace insertion in shoulders. Levers lace on sleeve hems. Short straight sleeves. Long but not complete length opening in the back. The bodice gathers into an embroidered band in front with attached self-ties.

Entirely hand-stitched infant nightgown made of fine striped cotton. Double casing, strings around the whole neckline. Short raglan sleeve. Bodice gathered into machine-embroidered band 8” across, from which extend long self-ties. Back opening. Handmade Valencia lace edging on sleeves.

Entirely hand stitched white dimity. Body cut in one piece, gathered into bound neckline. Gathers retained at front waist by 6” piped band to the ends of which plain cambric sashes are attached. Straight tubular raglan sleeves with fine cambric 1” frills on edge. Back opening. 1” hem.

Entirely hand-stitched long nightshirt or bathing gown made of coarse cotton. Narrowband collar. Cut like a chemise with a flaring shape. Gores on proper right side front and back. Masculine reinforcements at armscyes (over which the gores extend), along the shoulder, and neck gusset. Underarm gussets, long narrow sleeves gathered scantily into narrow band cuffs with buttons slightly closer to the sleeve than to the middle of the cuff. Simple thick cotton machine-laced lace edging on the collar, cuffs, and deep front slit. 4 white glass buttons. Covered-over slit in the back neck.

Entirely hand stitched white cotton. Deep pointed yoke in front, straight in back. Sloped shoulders. Piped seams. Full sleeves, long frilled cuffs. 4 MOP buttons, false placket below waist. Very full. Small round collar. Edged with thick narrow rikrak attached with crochet on collar and cuffs.

Almost all hand stitched white cotton. Deep pointed yoke in front, straight in back. Very full long sleeves. Wide pleated shirt front below yoke with mock full length closure; pleats retained at waist with narrow feather stitching, released fullness below. Small round collar and turnback cuffs edged with machine lace sewn onto the very narrow machine stitched hem of 1/2” wide cotton frill. No other machine stitching.

Hand-stitched infant nightgown made of thin white cotton. No waist, narrow frilled robings down the entire front. Long body gathered in both the back and front into the wide, fairly open round neckline. Self-bound with drawstring all around. Short straight sleeves with 1/2” hems and sort of inverted jockeys with wavy edges. Hems edged with narrow machine ‘crocheted’ edging. Narrow, long self-sashes anchored at robings. Not anchored at same level therefore may be a later addition.

White cotton nightgown with armscyes high on shoulder. Opens part way down front, closes with pearl buttons. Deep pointed yoke distinguished by excellent hand embroidered flowers and eyelet work, with large spray on CB; machine embroidered bands as cuffs of long full sleeves. Thin knit cotton lace on cuffs and around complete yoke which also has rikrack edging floating at the top edge of the knit edging.

Woman’s floor-length nightgown of white cotton (muslin?) , buttoning partway up the front into round neckline finished with turndown collar edged with handcrocheted lace. Deep yoke back and front, trimmed on front only with alternating crochet lace, and rows of vertical tucking. Long, not very full sleeves, finished at wrists with tucking and edging of matching lace. Very full skirt gathered with heading to yoke.

Child's nightgown made of pink and white cotton with white cotton net lace. Short standing collar of pink cotton, covered with scalloped lace ruffle, set into very short pink cotton bodice with angularly patterned lace overlay; long, fitted sleeves of the same, with scalloped lace ruffles at wrists. Scalloped lace is also sewn into seam between bodice and gathered white cotton skirt. Center front closure with mother of pearl buttons.

Little boy's nightshirt made of white PW cotton. Hand-stitched except for the armscyes and the bottom hem. Long straight sleeves with simple narrow hems. No gussets, or reinforcements. Flaring body with side seams, vents, and straight hem. Front placket opening with little pleat at the base, faced, as is the neck opening. One buttonhole at the top. It is speculated the maker could have machine-stitched the hems first, installed the flat sleeves, and then finished assembling it at the wearer's side.

Nightshirt made of white linen. The top half of the body and sleeves are made of finer linen than the bottom half. There are nine pleats at the back of the neck. Embroidery on the narrow cuffs.

Nightshirt made of plaided wool.

Nightshirt made of one piece of linen (92” x 32”). Knee-length with deep side slits. No gussets. Selvage edges. Narrow hem. No cuffs. Long, flat sleeves with large gussets and narrow hem. Embroidered band collar with mice teeth extending 1.5” down the edges of the front slit which seems to come to the waist, and a wide buttonhole on each end of the band for a ribbon. Simple needle lace filling in base of slit. Underarm gussets, no reinforcements.

Entirely hand-stitched man’s nightshirt made of fine linen. Very long; probably calf length. Cut from squares. Sleeves with deep cuffs. No underarm gussets and no reinforcements. Set into the body with 1/2” wide felled seam. Shallow back yoke into which the body is tightly gathered in the center. Collar has no evidence of starching and turns over with an open space in front; it is minutely topstitched, as are the placket and cuffs. Long center front opening finished with a placket with 3 (missing) buttons. Terminating in a horizontal band into which the bottom of the shirt is gathered for fullness in front. Neck has no gusset. Reinforcements in the side vents. Small unmatched pearl button at base of each cuff.
