Entirely machine-stitched infant petticoat made of rather coarse unbleached cotton. Deep waistband made of sleazy thin cotton, poorly assembled. The skirt was enclosed by casually placing it under the presser foot without gathering it first. 4 rows of pintucks near the hem. Very nicely made knit border with a diagonal sawtooth design.

Entirely hand-stitched petticoat made of fine cotton. Very full all around; no fasteners on waistband. Series of large and small tucks above unadorned hem.

Entirely hand stitched petticoat of black silk, apparently from a recycled dress; the lower half is quilted with a crescent design. Cotton batting throughout, golden yellow silk lining. Pleated so the front is flat and the pleats face away to meet in the back at a slit opening. 3” extensions on either end of heavy white cotton waistband, no fasteners. Strips of the same cotton folded into 3 layers, simply stitched to form straps secured at the front and not at the back. The top of the skirt is folded over to the inside, with the folded waistband encasing it. The hem was turned up an inch or so with 2 rows of top stitching; probably later it received the once-black wool braid binding.

Heavy quilted petticoat, entirely hand stitched. Made of delaine with alternating large and small dark brown squares with white figures, outlined in brick red on a shaded green ground. Lined with printed cotton, tan double linear quatrefoils alternating with 4-lobed tan medallions outlined with white ‘bubbles’ on a mahogany ground. Hem bound with black wool braid; Coarse white calico waistband, handmade buttonhole and black lacquered metal overall button. Appears to be original condition; about 12” and 14” above hem on the inside, there remain pairs of coarse singles cotton (?) thread ends that look as if they held a tuck in place, or in some way altered the length or drape of the petticoat, although no fold or fade lines exist to suggest such a use. They may have been basting threads.

Muslin petticoat, machine stitched waist band on a faced hip yoke to which a hand-quilted border is attached - most of the rest of the stitching by hand. The hem bound with brocaded cotton tape, also used to tie at the waist. Modern silver hooks and eyes on opening.

Entirely hand stitched white cotton petticoat, very full skirt gauffered onto white cotton waistband with long white cotton twill tape ties. Embellished with broderie anglaise butas forming a pyramind in the front above the hem, with a border the rest of the way around.Inked inscription on the CF waistband: “F.M. Washburn AD 1861”"

Fine white cotton bodiced petticoat, entirely hand stitched. Bodice has wide neckline with a small amount of cloth gathered above each breast into the wide binding; side back seams, short puffed sleeves, inset waistband. Back is lined with thinner cotton. Back edges are doubly corded with small eyelets for lacing; base of slit is neatly reinforced with stitching. Remains of ties anchored by a knot in top eyelets; one is a plied cotton string, the other a narrow woven tape attached to a plied cotton string. Neckline has a loop for a small button (missing.) Pair of brass hooks and eyes on waistband. Topstitched seams. Slim skirt has side gores and tight gauging in back; set onto inner wide tape waistband. Hem finished with modest broderie anglaise border; evidence of a knee-level deep tuck, now removed. The quality of all the sewing is superb. Would this be for a French dress?

An adult woman's quilted petticoat made from a dark olive green wool weft and dark black wool warp. Lined with dark brown cotton in a plain weave. Interfaced with cotton batting. Quilting is machine-stitched, with upper portion of petticoat in diagonals in black thread, while bottom half is quilted with diamond machine-stitches in blue thread. Set in black cotton waistband with deep, chunky knife pleats in CF and CB. Button located in CB closure, and is made of gutta percha. Upper hip portion of petticoat where pleats fall is not interfaced or quilted with stitches. Hem of petticoat has knife pleated trim of same wool fabric, above which is a strip of black velvet hand-embroidered with blue leafy vine. Inner hem edge is double-bound with two different color cotton braided twill tape - black and dark green. Inside lining has a lot of piecing and repairs, as does upper hip area. Tears and holes in wool outer fabric, but still structurally sound.

Petticoat, entirely hand stitched, made of soft royal shot blue/beige twilled silk (sarsnet), lined with mulberry and ivory plaid silk lustring. Opens on a seam; smoother over the front. Pleated rather crudely onto a brown lining cambric band; the turned over portion has evidence along its edge of a previous point of attachment (i.e. it has been shortened about 2”). It also has 2 other stitch lines from periods when it was even shorter. No evidence that any of the other seams once were open (as in 18th c) or that they were reworked in any way. No fasteners. Hem bound with simply figured black grosgrain ribbon and turned up about 3/4”. Lower third of the skirt is quilted with large, well-defined plume pattern. Deeply and softly padded with wool batting. About 5 1/3 yard circumference. Almost 39” long presently, even length all around.

Four gore sections each 20” wide at hem; waist dips lower in front where there are no gathers. Gathered into brown plain weave cotton waistband with modern blue denim reinforcement applied to place where button is attached. Small black plastic or vegetable ivory button. Hand made buttonhole. Quilted full length in straight parallel lines 1/2” apart but toward top the spacing is expanded to about 1”. Stitched with brown and black cotton threads.

Citron colored thin silk taffeta petticoat, no waistband or hem. Quilted over a thin cotton batting. Very finely executed pattern of hearts and flowers with diagonal ground above and below; one silk bound placket. Lined with brown plain weave cotton. Approximately 33 1/2” long by 93” in circumference

Petticoat, entirely hand stitched olive-brown silk taffeta, lined with brown glazed cotton on the bottom, and darker brown unglazed cotton above. Stitched with brown thread and with a thin light thread (apparently a ‘ran-out’ situation). Straight panels gathered all around with small pleats concentrating fullness in back; heavy white cotton waistband with PW cotton tape ties. Hems turned to inside and quilted. Deep feather quilted border design on diamond ground; above the knees it is simple horizontal quilting with one diagonal set, widely spaced. 33.5” long; 100” circumference.

Fine white cotton petticoat, hand stitched seams and superbly embroidered hem, with a machine stitched cotton waistband with a pearl button. Recycled 1820s dress. The embroidery is large-scale with double scalloped edge and large eyelets in a vinelike border, heavy padded satin stitch in white cotton. The embroidery on the hem is clearly from the 1820s.

Entirely hand stitched white cotton petticoat of moderate fullness. The double-scalloped hem is worked all around over the two side-front seams; the back seam was made after the embroidery was completed; the continuity of the design there is excellent. A grape-vine design is worked in white cotton broderie anglaise with additional lines of buttonhole stitch and stem stitch. The design is enlarged and elaborated in a wide flaring section in the front panel, from the waist to the hem. Mounted on a cotton waistband with gauffering, less fullness in the front. One MOP button at the back opening. One seam has carefully butted selvages where the hem embroidery is worked; above there it becomes a standard seam with a running stitch that becomes slightly coarser as it rises. The other seam has one selvage butted against the other’s fold, turning into a standard overcast seam with increasingly coarser stitching toward the top. The back seam is carefully worked over the embroidery and coarser at the top- it is not entirely clear whether a panel was removed. The top of the skirt had a 2-inch strip of coarser cloth added but the skirt was reset to be shorter; remains of stitching on the edge suggest it originally had been inserted into the waistband.

May or may not have been recycled silk. Fine, dark wool batting. No binding on hem. Skirt gathered into narrow brownish cotton waistband which has one long, cotton twill tape tie and the remains of the other. Seems all original. Quite long with large waist although may have been intended to overlap for bustle effect.

Handspun, handwoven linen Z singles. 20 EPIx24 PPI. Tiny hem and selvage. seams stitched with same linen. EW crossed-stitched in light blue linen at center ends, one with some remaining small design that was between the initials. Finished size 20x34"

A pair of entirely hand stitched cotton pillowcases. Edged with fine linen with hand embroidered eyelet edging. Initials LJ stitched in tiny red cross stitch.

Linen Z singlles, probably purchased, hand stitched with linen sinlges, tiny hem formed from selvage turned once. Seam across top and side, latter overcast. L Gale cross stitched in cursive, blue cotton.
