Full skirt with no tucks, hem turned up about 1 1/2" and whipped. Long full raglan sleeves with a narrow tuck around the midpoint; piped armscye. Tiny piped cuffs. Hook at cuff, back waist, and back neck. Eye at neck opening; bar tacks elsewhere.

Hand sewn and lined doll dress. Inset band at waist, puffed sleeves, cotton batten "falsies" of a blue and white horizontal stripe with two 4 1/2" insets of a striped fabric in brown/red/green/natural. Same striped fabric used for band and belt. Diagonal trim on bodice and on sleeves.

Handknit cotton stocking for doll, just like grownup kind. Tubular construction (?) , square heel. 6” long. It’s also very likely a knitting project for a little girl.

Dancing doll cut out of pasteboard, carefully painted details; Turkish garb made of real silk taffeta and gauze (from the wedding dress?) with spangles, feather plumes and lace. She wields a length of pink silk ribbon dotted with silver spangles, tied at one wrist, perhaps as a repair. It appears the backs of the hands were fitted with a pin or the like to hold the ribbon ends originally. Gilt paper bracelets and buckle. She has impromptu bends at at the neck and elbows, but she has real joints at the knees, and the skirt hem is wired to make it stand out. Probably she was intended to be held and danced by the ribbon attached to both hands, or else by 2 ribbons, one then being missing. 10.5” head to toe.

Adult woman's dolman jacket made from black or midnight blue cotton velveteen. Has sleeves made from two pieces, slightly bent. Full. Back of jacket splays out over bustle. Interfaced for warmth with cotton batting, with interior lining of black silk taffeta, machine-quilted. Jacket is trimmed with black blonde lace, and velveteen is decorated with silk soutache braiding details across shoulders and chest panels, CF button areas, three rows of lace down CF panels, and across back. Center back "tails" and bottom tabs are also trimmed in black chenille yarn.

Very long legs (to ankles) are gathered slightly into a narrow cuff band with a buttonhole. The crotch gusset has whipped selvage seams.

Man's drawers made of white jean with a napped fleece finish on the inside. Drawers are machine stitched (lock stitch) except for hand-overcast seam allowances in the crotch, and hand-finished vent in waist yoke. Slightly shaped waist yoke with two handmade buttonholes in front (buttons missing) and vent with two handmade eyelets in back. The pants legs gathered slightly into the yoke which is about as high in front as the back. The pants leg is cut in one piece so that the seam winds from the crotch to the top of the foot, ending in a vent. Simple hemmed slit opening from waist to crotch in front.

Pair of drawers of light pink silk crepe-de-chine with elastic waist. Very slight protrusions at lower edges of center front and center back to form gusset. Slit halfway up the sides and slightly cut away; leg edges finished with white cotton net insertion, edged with white cotton lace. Butterfly is embroidered in each front corner, with some net insertion in wings. Hand sewn.

Entirely machine-stitched, with some hand-finishing women's closed drawers made of white plain-weave medium-weight cotton. Knee-length or just above the knee. Attached to the waistband with closes at the side with a white milk-glass button. The legs of drawers are loose-fit, but not quite full. Attached to the waistband with simple gathers, not stoked. The leg bottoms are finished with 9 small tucks, a 1" band of cotton, and trimmed with a narrow 1" ruffle made of finer muslin cotton.

Shaped legs of drawers, finished off with 9 tucks on each leg, and a turn-and-turn hem approx. 1 1/4" deep. Edge is trimmed with machine-embroidered white work tape or band on each leg. Body of drawers set into waistband of on-grain cotton, with gentle gathers - not stoked or stroked. Button present, milk glass. Entirely machine-stitched with inside large seams whipped down by hand.

Skirt (b) - lined with glazed brown cotton, shaped at the bottom and pulled into puffs with blue and white striped cotton tapes. Polonaise has dropped waist with an asymmetrically draped apron front beneath a long V-shaped panel on the center front containing shirred fabric on the bias.

Mostly machine-stitched child's dress made of red, green, blue, black, yellow and white balanced plaid poplin. Silt warp and cotton weft with bands of golden orange and white brocade stripes in the weft to correspond to plain stripes in the warp. Gabrielle style with a widely flaring skirt. Back opening with button closure. High round neckline. Coat-like sleeves. Trimmed with apple green velvet bands forming a 'branch' from leaves extending and outlined in velvet and filled with puffs of the self-fabric; this appears on the front and back, and more around sleeve ends. The buttons are matching velvet with a double diamond escutcheon.

Entirely hand-stitched dress made of fine black silk satin. Graduated pleats over the bust from shoulder to center front waist (moderately high and pointed) with a very wide shallow neckline. The bodice is lined with white PW glazed cotton with bones at sides, center front, bust and center back. Closed in back with brass hook and eyes. Sleeves lined with blue-gray PW cotton and have fine pleats at the top and are restrained by a piped band above very full sleeves which are narrowed by fine pleats over the forearm and restrained by fine satin bands. Skirt is pleated onto a wide twill tape, gauffered in the rear and attached to the bodice interior at the bones and hem faced with dark brown PW glazed cotton.

Partly machine-stitched dress made of heavy olive camlet (thicker warp then weft plain weave with silvery gray satin stripes; trimmed with dark jade green taffeta. Bodice (a) - high round neckline, center front opening with fine embroidered dome buttons; long pointed Basque; princess seams covered with taffeta band with taffeta dagged points facing center front; this also borders the Basque and continues across the back of the neck; back has short tails folded back upon themselves to form 3 decorative layers; long wide coat-type sleeves that have the ends finished with a deep pleated flounce dagged at top and bottom; self-banded and accented with a taffeta bow. Apron (b) - apron overskirt tapers from knees in front to nearly the feet in back; unlined; dagged edges; side back seams inside fitted with rows of brass rings through which a tape is drawn to drape the sides. Skirt (c) - asymmetrical arrangement of a curved self bias band anchored by the bows at the sides; above pleated hem making use of stripes for effect; back has simple dagged edges.

Dress (a) - dress with high waist, set-in waistband; bodice on bias; 2 bust darts; drapery over bust centered with a piped strip; wide shallow neckline; piped bands form faux SB seam; upper sleeve has dense, narrow pleats bound at the bottom with a popped band with a self frill; wide at elbow; tapered to a close fitted wrist with a slit; skirt made of straight panels attached in medium pleats except in back where it is tightly gathered; back opening, hooks and eye; bodice lined and hem faced with dark brown glazed plain weave cotton lining; small tuck above hem. Pelerine (b) short pelerine; dips in front and back; high round neckline; unlined; finished around bottom with self frill.

Dress of white cotton percale, lined in white linen, both layers opening separately in front. Bodice front is a separate piece gathered to skirt at very high waist, and gathers on very narrow drawstrings at neckline and waist seam. Wide sleeves set into deep armscye; both layers are also separate at sleeve opening. Trained skirt is pleated to very center back of waistline. Sleeves and bottom of skirt are embroidered with abstracted floral motifs, vines, and leaves, with edge of fabric finished in pointed scallops. Hand sewn.

Tambour and very refined drawn thread work; in each corner of the hem is a large circle with elaborate drawn thread work surrounded by leaves and stems that border the piece; field has widely spaced springs with varied drawn thread work fillings; appears to originally have been an apron dating about 1760-1780; made of two whole 32.5" widths of cloth embroidered after joining; top is stitched into gathers under the arms where the top edge is just turned over to the inside to form the lower arc of the armscye; slightly scooped (apron waist) neckline with gathering tape; the back one goes over the sleeve tops as well; no waist; opens all the way down the back; short sleeves whose ends are worked in a bravura lace like drawn pattern with floral motifs; three casing with fine linen braided tapes draw the sleeve up in front, back and outside; no anchor point or buttons visible for free end of tape.

Loose-fitting bodice gathered into waistband; back opening; short neckband. Skirt fullness controlled with multi-layered box pleats all around, long pocket in proper right side. Large bishop sleeves gathered into narrow cuffs that button. Bodice and sleeves lined with tan glazed cotton. Leafy vine meander border around the hem, scrolls around cuffs, neckband and waistband.

Infant dress, entirely hand stitched, made from a pieced rectangle of printed cotton. Self-frill whipped onto the hem, selvages at the sides. Very high waist formed by a tubular casing formed by a tuck; casing around neckline with applied flat self-frill all around. Shoulder straps with short tubular sleeves set into the “hollowed out” armscye; casing near sleeve hem forms frill. Drawstrings are plain weave cotton or linen ties.

Entirely hand-stitched dress made of recycled Chinese silk with hand painted design. Long pointed waistline; wide, deep neckline with folds over the bust from shoulder to base of center front waistline; hook and eye back opening; short folded tubular sleeves with silk handspun lace frill; skirt interlined with light buckram; gauged onto base of bodice; sleeves and bodice lined with ivory glazed cotton; fabric is recycled from an earlier dress, perhaps 1780-1800. A intricate design on the imported Chinese ivory silk with painted trailing vine design of 3 shades of green with shaded fuchsia, blue and purple flowers with black inked outlines drawn to appear to be behind "bars" of widely spaced sets of woven green pin stripes. It is pieced in the back; the front has a reconstructed slit dart at the center front; there are opened curved seams in the back; stich marks from former seams on skirt.

Lace flowers applied to the front of bodice. High lace collar and modesty piece inserts into V shape opening. Wide lapels. Fine pleats on sheer silk sleeve ends. Bodice is boned. Hook / eye closure. Skirt (b) - bustle built into skirt. Pleated at the back of the waist. Trained.

Four-piece wedding dress enesemble of Anna D. Davis & Charles T. Terrell - Married on June 24th, 1896. Ensemble consists of four pieces - bodice, skirt, detachable collar, and bow, all of pale cream China silk satin. Bodice features large sleeve puffs near sleeve cap, which narrow into forarm sleeves. Triple truned silk at wrists and collar and waist terminate edges. CF closur eof hook sand eyes. Inside is lined with twill-weave cotton, with stays all acround waist section. Machined with inernal seems finished by hand. Hooks at CB inside to hold up skirt. Skirt is of same China silk satin, lined with loose-woven cotton tarlatan. CF back gauging, with CB closure of hook and eye. Hem is bound with cream twill tape. INner hem flounce of tarlatan trimmed in machined cotton bobbin lace. Wasitband of white plain weave cotton. Small train in back Collar is of matching silk satin with hooks and eyes in center back with inner stiff fabric. Bow is of sam silk satin wtih overlaoy of machined bobbinette lace in white silk.

Machine-stitched asymmetrical three piece dress made of printed cotton with a black linear grid pattern. Basque (a)- asymmetrical bodice opens across the lower front. The opening, edge, cuffs, tails and hem is banded with brown bias cotton; fairly narrow sleeves with modest faux military pointed cuffs. Pleated military coat tail effect in back. Flat 2 hole pearl buttons down asymmetrical front and used as trims. The front has no shaping darts or seams, suggesting this was for a large body or maternity use. Skirt (b) - skirt with a waistband that buttons in the back (buttons missing). Gored, smooth across the front and tightly gathered across the back. The hem is finished with a brown wool braid, and a flounce set around the bottom; edged with brown. Fancy pocket low on proper right side. Overskirt (c) - overskirt gathered on a drawstring made of a torn strip of self fabric. Fabric pleated into the lower side seams to create a simple drape. There may have been a tie or tape attached to the seam allowances of the 2 back seams, 14" from the waist, to retain the drapery toward the rear. Hem is banded in brown.

Entirely hand-stitched girls dress made of white cross-barred dimity. Infant bodice (gathered into a shallow yoke) with full cotton lining; set-in waistband; full skirt with deep tuck above hem, removed. Wide neckline, short generously frilled sleeves edged with coarse machine lace, set into piped armscye; back closure with no evidence of hooks or buttons; waistband and sleeve hems are not made as casings for a ribbon, but probably the sleeves were each tied up with a ribbon or bracelet.

Entirely hand-stitched boy's dress (given that the skirt is quite short) made of chrome orange vermicelli print cotton. Smooth bodice; straight waist; short sleeved made of double self-frills with piped hems. Draw string wide neckline, meant to be pulled off shoulders. Back opening with concealed brass hook / eye closure. Bodice lined with sturdy white cotton. Deep hem with double border of white rickrack or wave braid.

Hand-sewn child's dress made of deep blue linsey-woolsey with widely spaced printed red, white, green, and light brown flowers. The pleated bodice has a wide square neckline with short gathered sleeves. A wide waistband is attached to a full, gathered skirt. The hem is faced with blue-glazed cotton.

Cotton print dress entirely hand-stitched. For a small child, but too large for a toddler. Fabric is a cotton print of tan circles with brown stripes across circle. Gathered bodice attached to square neckline and shoulder straps. Short sleeves, lined with natural cotton, with piping between sleeve and shoulder. Two rows or gathered flounced fabric trimming sleeve. Waistband of self fabric, with skirt with one large tuck halfway down. Generous hem. CB closure of 5 buttons. Skirt and bodice unlined.

Young girl or toddler’s dress of light blue cotton. Unlined. Machine-sewn with some hand finishing inside. Asymmetric closure on left side of dress with large buttons of carved MOP. Hidden hooks and eyes at shoulder and around neckline. Dress does not have a yoke - the body of the dress is gathered to the high round neckline of the dress. Small stand collar. Long sleeves are full, set into the wrist band and shoulder seam with gathers. Machine-embroidered tape machine-sewn around wrists, stand collar, and down side front closure. Large square sailor collar. Also edged with same machine-embroidered tape. Belt is connected to CB, made from same blue fabric with machine-embroidered tale. Pointed ends. Small hole above wrist of left sleeve. Some light staining.

4-piece evening gown made of printed cotton calico. The print consists of a 'moire' pattern using chrome orange (chrome yellow exposed to alkali). The dress is partially deconstructed - suggesting "harvesting" after donation at a Calico ball. Bodice (a) - wide neckline (evening) with the center front coming to a slight point. Smocking or gathering at CF for fan-front style. The neckline has piping of self-fabric. Bodice lined with cotton. CB closure of hooks and eyes. No stays. Skirt (b)- unlined. Gathered all around waistband, and CB closure of hooks and eyes. Sleeve Attachment (c) - long bell sleeves attached to sloping shoulders. Scalloped. Unlined. Sleeve Cap Attachment (d) - scalloped.

Two-piece twill wool day dress with standing collar, fitted Basque bodice with extended assymettrical side drape, and two-piece fitted sleeves. Faux marcasite floret buttons, watch pockets on either side with crows' foot embroidered details. Printed cotton lining of grape vine motif in skirt and waistband. Tie inside skirt lining at CB. Purple wool is heavily gathere din CB, with CB closure. Pocket to the right. Skirt wool twill hem is faced with cotton glazed fabric, while inside lining fabric with grape vien motif is hemed with black tarlatan. Bodice is lined with brown glzed cotton and weight on all four quadrants with round, fabric-covered weights.

Working woman's dress of cotton print; black and white speckled ground, with small design of comma shapes in black with white eye. Semi-fitted bodice extending below normal waistline, buttoning up the front with smoked pearl buttons into high, round neckline, trimmed with narrow pleated frill of self material. Long, simply cut sleeves. Full; gathered ankle length skirt attached to bodice with heading. Dress cut for a large person.

Infant's Dress (a) - made of plain weave cotton and embroidered netting tape. Yoke has vertical pleats in cotton with lace insertion and vertically spaces. High round neckline. Yoke is trimmed with flounce of netting tape. Long sleeves are full. Wristband is made of a cotton strip with netting tape over top. Simple skirt extending down from yoke, attached with simple gathering and finished inside with piping in seam. 3 tucks are across bottom hem then lace netting tape panels, then 3 more tucks, then a flounce of tucks edged with more lace tape netting. The center back closure of ties / ribbons which were not present at time of donation - added at time of accession for sake of closure. Note (b) - Came with note that says "'Dorothy's first short dress.' Worn by Dorothy after she was taken out of long gowns."

Two piece dress of chocolate brown silk taffeta. a.) Fitted bodice cut to narrow peplum dipping at front and back and buttoning up front, with brown tinted pearl ball buttons, into a plain, high stand-up collar. V shaped decoration from shoulder to bosom center of brown pleated drapery on one side and beige / brown wool passementerie on the other. Long close fitting sleeves finished with Valenciennes lace frill. b.) Floor length skirt edged at hem with ornamental flounces. Plain knee length draped layer slit up front and back attached to waistband. To be worn with bustle

Evening dress of black silk woven lace, black china silk, and black silk crepe-y satin. Bodice, which fastens down proper left front with snaps, consists of an unshaped, sleeveless china silk lining with wider lace overlayer; lace has very short magyar sleeves which end with flat "ruffle", which hangs loose at both ends. At slightly dropped waistline, unshaped satin skirt is attached with self-fabric waistband, which has a bow-shaped motif of black glass seed beads and silver cord, with attached beaded tassel. Strip of lace is attached at each side under waistband. Apart from tack near hip, skirt is fully open beneath overlap down proper left side.

Three piece reception gown, of heavy cream colored silk grosgrain. a.) Fitted, long sleeved bodice lacing up front. V neckline trimmed with pleated material cut to points at waist, back and front. Long pale blue lace that seems to be of the period. b.) Floor length skirt the back made of cotton lining material fitted with two steal bands to support bustle. controlled inside with an elastic band skirt front has trimmed inserts of smocked material. c.) separate train attached at back waist, inter lined with thick batting, with heavy hooks at each end of waistband to attach over the skirt back. d.) Neckline and sleeves and skirt front trimmed with faux pearl and white seed bead passementerie

Child's dress with a orange background with black polka dots. Long sleeves. Bodice has round neck trimmed with black rikrak. Two lines of rikrak down the center front to the waist. Four round gold button in center between rikrak. One button missing. Same buttons and rikrak on the back; rikrak trim around the waist and shoulders and along the hems of the tiered skirt. Shoulders are smocked at the seams.

2-piece 1890s walking dress made from a brown silk (warp) and wool (weft) plain weave fabric. Bodice - CF opening of buttons, cut steel (1 missing), with pleated "fans" on either breast. High round neckline, unusual or 1890s, perhaps adapted or collar is missing (?). Sleeves are very full at shoulder and bicep, and narrow to slit-wrist opening. No cuff. Waistband of pleated self fabric, with bows present at CF waist closure, Cb waist, and one large bow CB of neckline. Bodice is lined with printed cotton in a windowpane pattern, and open-weave cotton lining sleeves. Stays sewn in across waist in bodice. Waist tape of cotton duck tape has been widened. Underarm protectors are inserted inside of bodice. Skirt - skirt is made from shaped panels. No train at hem. A few knife pleat gathers at skirt waistband CB. Waistband is made from same cotton windowpane fabric as bodice lined with. Skirt itself is lined with glazed cotton in brown, with twill braided tape at hem. Hook and eye closure at CB waistband. Minimal discoloration for soiling.

Dress made of very fine challis - wool / silk blend. White printed with oak leaf sprigs. Pale blue silk piping. Huge Gigot sleeves. V-shaped waistline with bretelles. Central panel down skirt front with self rosettes every 7-8”. Rare example of toby printing- probably hand block printed on English challis.

2-piece dress made of luxurious brown plaid ikat silk taffeta. Altered sleeves and waistband to fit larger person. Bodice (a) - pagoda sleeves with black silk lace and braid trim. Concealed front opening. Pocket in the right front. The bodice is lined with brown twill cotton. Skirt (b) - pleated skirt. Braid on the hem.

Dress made of green, violet, black, and white plaid silk with a violet trim. Lined with tan cotton. Hook and eye front closure. Pleated. Wool braid hem finish.

Entirely hand-stitched 2-piece dress made of rich brown silk taffeta with coral and black brocade striped design. Jacket (a) - Basque. Fancy black and golden brown fringe on pagoda sleeves and Basque hem. Eleven buttonholes; no buttons. Skirt (b) - unpicked straight skirt panels.
