Cap

Cap

Object/Artifact

Seams and edges covered with 1/2” silver lace, with an extra bit at the center front next to the edge. Edges bound with pink silk ribbon, also used for ties. Stitched with linen thread. The inside is lined with coarse cotton (microscope identified) printed with a dark black Indienne design, which under the microscope looks for all the world like paint, not dye (it appears to sit on top of the fiber and appears to be attached by means of a glossy binder; the imprint is crisp and neat- not bleeding or blotching as some early dyed colors tended to do). One side panel is pieced at the bottom.

Cap

Cap

Object/Artifact

Infant’s cap made of fine percale, French style with round insert in crown. There is an insert of net in the CB either to enlarge the cap or to replace the bulk of what would have been a seam ridge right beneath the infant’s head. There is a tiny flat linen braid drawstring and casing around the crown, and another in the front of the brim which reaches only from ear to ear. Expertly embroidered with white cotton in a stylized flower and leafy branch design using satin stitch, outline stitch, French knots and eyelets, some of which have simple needlelace fillings. Drawn thread work outlines each casing and the back seams.
